Celebrity MasterChef said farewell to another contestant tonight, just days before the finale.
Seven participants were whittled down to six in Thursday’s semi-final, with comedian Shazia Mirza being sent home after preparing a ‘personal’ dish that failed to please judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
Emmerdale actress Amy Walsh, Love Island‘s Luca Bish, popstar Jamelia, The Wanted’s Max George, actor Marcus Brigstocke, and singer and broadcaster Wynne Evans were among her competitors.
After hanging up her apron, Shazia said: ‘Obviously I’m disappointed but I’m proud I’ve got this far. It’s been great fun and it’s been a great experience.’
Shazia was ejected after the cooks were challenged with producing a dish that “transported them to a special time in their lives,” with John asking them all to “stir him with emotion.”
She chose to cook Rajasthan tikka paneer with a ginger and garlic crust in a tomato, onion, and ghee masala sauce served with a flatbread reminiscent of her grandma.
The meal was ‘flat,’ according to John, while Gregg remarked that it was too heavy and that he would struggle to stomach the quantity of ghee.
Luca, who comes from an Italian family, prepared a pasta meal inspired by his nonna, Wynne prepared a bouillon blann with onion sauce in memory of his grandparents, and Marcus prepared Spanish tapas in honour of his first date with his wife.
Earlier in the show, the participants were challenged to recreate one of Big Zuu’s meals, with the rapper and TV personality serving as a guest judge.
Big Zuu praised Wynne’s fufu and okra stew in particular, saying his own mother would have been ‘proud’ of his efforts.
Amy prepared a noodle bun with halloumi fries, Marcus made jollof and bang bang broccoli, Luca made mac and cheese, and Jamelia won star chef for her African banana fritters with different chocolate-based accompaniments.
Shaziah’s elimination comes after a Strictly Come Dancing pro said a tearful farewell to the competition.
‘Dianne, honestly we hope you have enjoyed it,’ said Greg after John announced her departure.
‘I feel gutted to be the first one to go home.’
Struggling to hold back her tears she added: ‘I think eliminations get to me, I am used to them though but they never get easier.’
Celebrity MasterChef continues tomorrow at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
