Celebrity Gogglebox stars Anne-Marie and Nick Grimshaw in tears over emotional singing scene in Coda: ‘I can’t bear it’

The stars of Celebrity Gogglebox just could not keep it together watching Coda and we don’t blame them – it’s emotional!

Pop star Anne-Marie, radio DJ Nick Grimshaw, and Strictly Come Dancing couple John Whaite and Johannes Radebe were left in tears on Friday night after sitting through the Oscar-winning movie.

Coda tells the story of Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), who is the only hearing person in a Deaf family, as she struggles to balance her dreams of singing and going to music school with her family.

Her parents, played by Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin, are concerned about their fishing business, while her brother Leo (Daniel Durant) struggles with his place in the family.

It’s a super sweet story and the ending is just the cherry on top of the cake, after Ruby’s parents attend her performance and get to witness the magical reactions of fellow audience members when she wows them with her voice.

One particularly poignant moment is when the music cuts out and there is nothing but silence, offering an insight into what the mum and dad are experiencing.

Ruby’s dad then asks her to sing for him when they are alone together, and that was enough to tip the Gogglebox cast over the edge.

‘We should all be talking about this film, it won loads of Oscars but we’re not talking about it because of Will Smith,’ said comic John Richardson, referencing the famous slap of Chris Rock.

Nick’s niece Liv Grimshaw was pretty much inconsolable watching the film, while Loose Women star Judi Love had to wipe away tears.

Anne-Marie was probably the most tearful of them all, needing to wipe her eyes with her t-shirt.

‘I can’t bear it,’ she said with a crack in her voice, as Ruby’s dad put his hands around her neck while she sang to feel the vibrations.

As for pro dancer Johannes and Bake Off winner John, they were transfixed by the heartfelt moment, with John remarking: ‘That was bloody beautiful.’

It wasn’t just the stars on the sofa in floods of tears watching Coda, as viewers at home were also moved.

‘Need to watch Coda now… I’m already in bits from watching these clips,’ one person tweeted.

‘I’m so emotional after seeing that clip of Coda. I just want to go to my mum’s house for a cuddle now,’ wrote another.

A third viewer tweeted: ‘Coda is one of the most glorious, most funny & most truthful films I’ve ever seen. I absolutely adored it – for so many reasons. Everyone should see it.’

The episode ended with comedian John joking with his wife Lucy Beaumont, noting that the tear-jerking scene was quite the contrast to the start of the film, where the family communicated swear words to each other via Sign Language.

‘It’s a gear change after t**t waffle innit’, he laughed.

Gogglebox continues Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
