The Simpsons have finally updated Moe’s Tavern after 33 years, but if you saw last night’s show you may have missed it.
The most recent episode, dubbed Pin Gal, which aired on Sunday night was a monumental occasion for The Simpsons, as a long-absent character reappeared for the first time since the very first season.
Al Jean, a producer and screenwriter, hinted on Twitter that there was an additional momentous occasion.
He posted: ‘New The Simpsons tonight guest starring A. Brooks and Fred Armisen.
‘And… something is missing, that’s been on for 33 seasons. First person to guess correctly wins season 3 dvd.’ Fans tried their luck with guesses ranging from ‘the TV’ to ‘the cash register’.
Alas, they were wrong.
The correct answer was… the cigarette machine!
One fan asked Jean if the decision came because ’smoking is bad?’
Jean clarified: ‘Also there really wasn’t much of a joke… replacements to come!’
Marge was reunited with Jacques, the man she almost had an affair with in the 1990 episode Living On The Fast Lane, elsewhere in the episode.
Albert Books reprised his role as Jacques, but has subsequently voiced a variety of characters, including Hank Scorpio, Brad Goodman, and The Simpsons Movie antagonist Russ Cargill.
