Call the Midwife star Helen George has said it was a ‘Christmas miracle’ the festive special was made this year, with filming being disrupted as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
For the ninth consecutive year, Call the Midwife will air a special episode on 25 December.
While it has become tradition for viewers to catch up with the London-based midwives depicted in the period drama every Christmas, this year’s festive episode could have very easily not taken place.
During an interview on The One Show on Thursday, Helen, who plays Nurse Trixie Franklin in the show, explained that those involved in the production weren’t certain what would happen when the first nationwide lockdown came into effect.
‘We didn’t know whether we were going to be able to film it because we were supposed to start filming when lockdown happened originally,’ the actor said.
‘So the fact that it’s even been made is quite frankly a Christmas miracle.’
Helen, 36, told The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Ronan Keating that the Call the Midwife 2020 Christmas special is ‘very festive’ and ‘very traditional’, with the exciting arrival of the circus in town in the episode, which they ‘didn’t think we were going to be able to film’.
‘So it’s just a really lovely, feel-good Christmas show. But I think there’ll probably be a few tears along the way, as there normally is,’ she stated.
The actor added the programme is a ‘love letter to the NHS’.
Expressing her admiration for medical workers, Helen emphasised how ‘we really need the NHS’, describing the health service as ‘the backbone of our society’.
Having spoken about the crucial work medical workers have been doing throughout the pandemic, she added: ‘Hopefully they will be appreciated.’
The Call the Midwife Christmas special will air on Christmas Day at 7.40pm on BBC One.
