Call Fans of The Midwife have been upset by Olly Rix’s departure from the BBC series, which calls into doubt his character Matthew’s relationship with Trixie.
However, it is possible that fans may see more of him on the historical drama.
In the most recent episode of the programme, Trixie (Helen George) discovers that her husband Matthew has a plan to fix his financial troubles, but it may require them to stay apart for an extended period of time.
Matthew tells her that he has chosen to relocate all the way to New York in order to start a business partnership with his friend Chester, without first consulting her.
While the intention is for his move to last three or four months, if his enterprise is successful, he may be able to stay in New York forever.
Is Olly Rix leaving Call The Midwife forever or could be return?
While viewing Sunday night’s episode of Call The Midwife, viewers were heartbroken to learn that Matthew, and therefore Olly, would be departing.
‘What I wouldn’t give to have the funny loving happy Trixie and Matthew back,’ wrote Hollie, while Kelly-Ann added: ‘Trixie deserved the happy ending.’
Jodie stated that Matthew ‘deserves better’, while an X account called A TV Friend praised the actor for his performance.
‘Olly, you have been an incredible and a much loved fan favourite, Matthew really offered hope and was a hero when the train crashed and always offered safety and calm,’ they wrote.
So is this really the end for Matthew, or could he return as Olly in the future?
RadioTimes.com reported that his departure doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the end of the road for good.
According to the magazine, he has the option of returning at a later date.
Olly released a message on X before of the show’s newest episode, addressing questions about his character’s narrative and how it may finish.

‘I do not use Facebook – profiles there are neither quoting me nor speaking for me,’ he said.
‘Furthermore, I have made no public comment whatsoever regarding Call the Midwife or my time on the show. Thank you.’
How do Call The Midwife fans feel about Matthew’s exit?
Several viewers of the show believed that Matthew’s character had been written in a very different way than in previous plots.
One X account going by the handle @smilecouples remarked: ‘You wrote a beautiful love story for Trixie & Matthew with a beautiful wedding.
‘But this season, Matthew has been written as a different character. Where is the same Matthew that the viewers & Trixie fell in love with? Why not let them work through their drama?’
Kate also shared: ‘Call the Midwife is absolutely one of my favourites, but I’m completely baffled by the turn of this storyline and how backwards Matthew’s character arc has become?!’
