The cast of Call the Midwife is claimed to be’stunned and saddened’ after learning that a major cast member may be leaving.
Since its debut in 2012, the BBC’s historical drama has been a fan favourite, with dedicated Christmas specials among the most-watched seasonal programming.
It has now been rumoured that one of the cast’s most popular and recent additions may be poised to quit, leaving others distraught.
Olly Rix, who has portrayed Matthew Aylward since the programme’s debut in season 10, may be departing the east London production.
It’s news that came as a surprise when Matthew married Beatrix (Helen George) in the closing episode of the current 12th season.
A source has described the sad mood behind the scenes: ‘The news of Olly’s departure has left the cast and crew stunned and upset.’
Speaking to The Sun, they continued: ‘They thought he was a mainstay after his prominent wedding scenes to Helen last season. Some feel it’s a bit unfair.’
Call the Midwife watchers were left ‘weeping’ after the poignant proposal episode over Christmas 2022, before to his big wedding episode.
Despite what appears to be a surprise decision, Rix has previously stated that his time on Call the Midwife was not always supposed to be long.
He said: ‘I don’t know if the show wants me until 2026 – I don’t know. One never really knows but as far as I’m concerned, I’m not looking for the next thing.’
Both Olly and Helen divorced their long-term marriages during the summer, with Helen splitting from Call the Midwife co-star Jack Ashton.
Meanwhile, Olly parted up with his actor girlfriend Natasha Fagri, with insiders claiming that work demands caused their split.
Call The Midwife is expected to return to BBC later this year.
