Bryan Cranston has offered the clearest sign yet that the Malcolm in the Middle ensemble is gearing up for a huge reunion.
The 67-year-old American actor rose to prominence in the United States for his portrayal as Hal, Malcolm’s well-meaning but stupid father in the series.
The sitcom, which aired for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006, quickly became one of the most popular of its day, receiving several prizes and honours.
The comedy, led by Frankie Muniz as the titular Malcolm, follows the escapades of a lower middle-class family in suburban California.
Following the conclusion of Malcolm in the Middle, Bryan rose to international prominence as Walter White in the crime drama Breaking Bad.
Bryan has since worked on a Malcolm in the Middle reunion, affirming his involvement in 2016 and giving weight to the reports in 2021.
Now, 17 years later, in a new interview, the Breaking Bad star has all but confirmed that a resurrection of the iconic series has finally been given the go light.
‘I’m curious about that family 20 years later,’ he told GQ Magazine. ‘Where are they? What happened? What are the kids doing? They’re grown men now.’
Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, asked the Walter White actor to see if he’d be interested in reuniting the gang for a film.
It was claimed earlier this year that the show’s cast had gathered to explore a feature-length reunion for Malcolm, Hal, and the rest of the family.
‘[Linwood] said he would think about it, and he got his writers together,’ Bryan explained. ‘If they can come up with a great idea, then he’ll pursue it.’
With the veteran actor preparing to retire and spend more time at home, any Malcolm in the Middle reunion would have to happen before 2026.
‘For the last 24 years, [my wife] Robin has led her life holding onto my tail. She has tremendous benefit from it, but … I want to level that out. She deserves it.’
