Simon Cowell rather surprised Britain’s Got Talent viewers during Friday’s semi-final when he whipped out a pretty serviceable impersonation of Sir David Attenborough.
Judges Simon, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams gave glowing feedback to seven-year-old mini-environmentalist Aneeshwar Kunchala, who returned to the show with another poem about the importance of looking after the planet.
He had previously been invited to come onto the show by David for his Golden Moment, a new auditioning initiative for the 2022 series.
As presenters Ant and Dec came to Simon for comment, he backed up his colleagues’ praise for Aneeshwar, saying: ‘I agree with everything. It was pure, utter magic – and let’s remember you are seven years old, and there was so much to remember and to time everything with the images…’
Bringing back previous comparisons with revered broadcaster and biologist Sir David Attenborough from earlier in the show, Simon then leant forward towards the microphone.
‘Here’s a conversation I think is going to happen from [sic] Mr Attenborough,’ he added, before adopting the distinct tones of Sir David and saying: “Aneeshwar, I would like you to take over from me doing Blue Planet.”’
As the crowd in the theatre whooped and clapped in surprise over Simon’s really quite good impression, viewers took to Twitter to check what they had just heard.
‘Who knew Simon Cowell could do a semi decent David Attenborough impression,’ joked one viewer, while another posted: ‘Simon Cowell impersonating our David Attenborough! Good work!’

‘Damn, hope Simon gets through for his David Attenborough impression,’ quipped one fan.
However, not everyone was convinced, with others comparing it to the Queen and Harry Potter villain Voldermort… which we guess is also true.

Impersonations aside however, Aneeshwar impressed viewers at home, amassing enough votes to make the top three acts of the final semi-final.
With Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer act, comedian Axel Blake, winning outright, Aneeshwar went head to head with singing collective Welsh of the West End and claimed his place in Sunday’s final after receiving David, Alesha and Amanda’s votes.
The full line-up is now in place for the 2022 season finale, excepting the wild card entry, and includes singers Loren Allred, Tom Ball and Maxwell Thorpe, as well as 13-year-old ventriloquist Jamie Leahey and impressionist Ben Nickless.
Britain’s Got Talent returns on Sunday at 7.30pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
