Loch Henry has taken a much darker turn after the fairly upbeat ending of the first episode of Black Mirror season six, Joan Is Awful.
The second installment involves a “young couple” who “come to a tranquil Scottish hamlet to begin work on a genteel nature documentary – but are pulled to a juicy local narrative involving terrible occurrences from the past.”
While it is not based on a true tale, the events proceed in the manner of a true crime documentary, which is precisely what protagonists Pia and Davis are interested in exploring.
But what they discover about Davis’ parents is even worse, leaving Pia defenceless in the hands of his mother, Janice.
Everything you need to know about the cast is right here…
Samuel Blenkin as Davis
Davis, played by The Witcher: Blood Origins’ Samuel Blenkin, returns to his hometown with his love Pia only to uncover a sinister mystery hiding behind his parents’ secret.
The Peaky Blinders star has also played Scorpius Malfoy in the West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Talking about Loch Henr, Samuel said: ‘I loved how it was penetratingly prescient.’
‘It’s just something that I hadn’t thought about, the way that we, how readily we want to consume other people’s trauma is packaged in a kind of dramatic form,’ he added.
Myha’la Herrold as Pia
Davis’ American girlfriend Pia, played by Myha’la Herrold, is left exposed when she uncovers his mother’s horrible truth.
She has previously appeared in the films Industry, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Modern Love.
Talking about taking on the Black Mirror role, Myha’la said: ‘I think when I was watching Black Mirror and wasn’t even thinking about TV and film, it wasn’t on my radar yet, really, so I was just enjoying it.
‘I was just enjoying it as a blissful audience member and then getting to be a part of it was kind of a oh, wait, what? Like, this is, uh, this is like kind of a big deal.
‘And it really struck me then when I was about to go do it. Like what I was really like the universe I was about to join. It’s pretty amazing.’
Daniel Portman as Stuart
Daniel Portman, a Scotsman, plays Davis’ local buddy Stuart, who urges the filmmakers to investigate the mystery.
The actor, well known for his portrayal as Game of Thrones’ Podrick Payne, is joined by fellow Scotsman John Hannah, who plays his on-screen father Richard.
John has appeared in films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors, The Mummy film series, Spartacus, Before You Go, and Genesis.
Monica Dolan as Janet
Monica Dolan, who starred in The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe, plays Davis’ mother Janet.
She appears to be a worried widow at first, bringing her son and his new girlfriend back home, before transforming into someone prepared to go to great measures to keep her secret hidden.
Monica is most known for her work as Rosemary West in Appropriate Adult, for which she received a Bafta, and for her depiction of Karen Richards in the West End show All About Eve, for which she won an Olivier award.
Black Mirror is available to watch on Netflix.
