Black Mirror: Are the mystery monoliths around the world promo for a new season?

A series of mysterious monoliths have been cropping up all over the world over the last few weeks, leaving onlookers baffled – but people on social media reckon they might have an explanation.

The first mirrored monument was found in November by Utah Department of Public Safety workers surveying bighorn sheep by helicopter.

It was followed by a second monolith appearing in Romania, before a third in California and a fourth on the Isle of Wight. A new one also appeared at the base of a cliff on the Isle of Wight.

As yet there’s no official explanation for the plinths. Some would have you believe they’re messages from alien life, due to their similarity to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

However, Twitter users are speculating that it could all be promo for an upcoming series of Black Mirror.

Dozens of people online are speculating that the mysterious constructions could all be leading up to a new run of the dystopian drama.

‘This monolith ‘thing’ is most definitely going to be advertising for the next series of Black Mirror,’ one wrote.

‘So is the monolith a commercial coup for Black Mirror???’ another said.

Only time will tell if their theories are proved correct.

Black Mirror first aired on Channel 4 in 2011, before moving to Netflix in 2016. The last series came in 2019, following the release of full-length film Bandersnatch over Christmas 2018.

The show’s creator Charlie Brooker has been busy recently, revealing the cast for the upcoming Netflix special Death To 2020. The mockumentary boasts an impressive roster of stars, including Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Friends star Lisa Kudrow, and Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones.

Stranger Things actor Joe Keery, Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani, Golden Globe-winner Tracey Ullman, How I Met Your Mother actress Cristin Milioti, and Truth Seekers star Samson Kayo will also star.

The logline reads: ‘2020: A year so [insert adjective of choice here], even the creators of Black Mirror couldn’t make it up… but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a little something to add. ‘Death To 2020 is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is?

Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix.
