Billie Piper has admitted that we probably won’t see Rose Tyler back on the TARDIS anytime soon.
In 2005, Billie, then in her early twenties, introduced Doctor Who fans to Rose, a companion of Christopher Eccleston’s iteration of the Doctor.
The actor made her last on-screen appearance as the character in the 2013 specials, which starred Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, saw David Tennant make a guest appearance as the Tenth Doctor and the late John Hurt appear as the War Doctor.
While Billie acknowledged that playing Rose was a ‘great role’, during a recent interview, she said that she ‘wouldn’t go back’, as she wouldn’t want to spend long periods of time away from her three children.
‘I wouldn’t go back. It’s a great role, but you’re away from your kids for so long,’ she told The Guardian.
‘My experience was that you’re in Wales for nine months solid. And as a job it dominates your life.’
Billie added that as the sci-fi series is so massive with families, she could barely escape the fame.
Although she doesn’t fancy playing Rose on the TV show again, Billie has tried to encourage her children to watch it… with little success.
Saying that her children have ‘absolutely no interest’ in her early singing career, the I Hate Suzie star said: ‘They certainly don’t give a s**t about my music career. They don’t like seeing me in Doctor Who, and I have pushed that on them a number of times.’
Billie revealed that her eldest son, who is 12 years old, ‘would get very upset that I was being chased or scared or attacked, so I thought, “OK, this is a weird mental leap for you”.’
In 2006, the actor expressed her interest in playing a female Doctor, stating: ‘In the next few years I’d love to play a female version of Doctor Who. I know exactly how I would play her – she would be crafty in a clever kind of way.’
Of course, Jodie Whittaker eventually became the first woman to play the role, making her first appearance in the 2017 Christmas special.
Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
