Dominic Cummings’ scathing attack on the British government on their handling of the coronavirus outbreak has sparked calls for Benedict Cumberbatch to reprise his role as the political adviser in a Channel 4 sequel series.
Today, Cummings appeared before a joint parliamentary committee, where he said that the government ‘fell disastrously short of the standards the public has a right to expect’ during the pandemic’.
The former adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson made several damning claims, including that the government’s lockdown plan included a section on ‘who do we not save?’ and that Health Secretary Matt Hancock ‘should have been fired for at least 15, 20 things’.
In 2019, Doctor Strange star Cumberbatch played Cummings in Brexit: The Uncivil War, a Channel 4 TV drama that depicted the lead-up to the 2016 European Union referendum.
And now, given the severity of Cummings’ claims about the government and the Prime Minister, numerous people believe a sequel could – or should – be on the way.
‘Benedict Cumberbatch is probably frantically taking notes in readiness for reprising his role as Dominic Cummings,’ one person tweeted.

‘Feel bad for benedict cumberbatch, he must be dreading this sequel,’ someone else wrote.
Another Twitter user compared Cummings’ testimony to ‘reality TV’, stating: ‘Hopefully Benedict Cumberbath is taking notes for when he reprises the role in the film of this whole debacle’.
Someone else quoted a statement Cummings reportedly said to Johnson, with the political strategist previously telling the Prime Minister: ‘You are more frightened of me having the power to stop the chaos than you are of the chaos.’
‘I want to hear Benedict Cumberbatch say that,’ they added.
One person expressed their belief that Cumberbatch could ‘win an Oscar’ for his portrayal of Cummings’ testimony.
Another said that they ‘can’t wait to see Benedict Cumberbatch in a Spiderman costume’, after Cummings referenced a popular Spider-Man meme during his appearance in front of the committee.
Brexit: The Uncivil War was nominated for Outstanding Television Movie at the 2019 Emmy Awards.
When speaking about his role in the drama around the time of its release, Cumberbatch said that he ‘wanted to have the challenge of transforming into someone that’s pretty far from myself, in many ways, and to see the world through his eyes’.
‘I wanted to look into understanding how and why he did what he did, and how and why that affected the outcome of the referendum,’ he said.
Following the statements made by Cummings about the government’s approach to the pandemic, Piers Morgan apologised for not going ‘harder’ on governmental figures in light of the ‘shocking testimony’.
In one tweet, Morgan wrote: ‘His testimony is utterly devastating & exposes a terrifying level of incompetence & deceit led by Boris Johnson & Matt Hancock that cost 1000s of lives. Heads should roll.’
