Bear Grylls reflects on ‘bad day in the wild’ after traumatic bee sting

Bear Grylls recalls a particularly difficult day on the job when he was stung by a bee.

The explorer discovered his extreme sensitivity to insects while filming an episode of Born Survivor in Baja, Mexico in 2008.

He was stung while cutting honeycomb from a nest, and his face immediately swelled up, leaving him practically blind.

Years later, in 2015, Bear poked fun at what unfolded, sharing a selfie of his severely puffed up face and writing: ‘#TBT – The day I found out I was allergic to bees. #BearvsTheBee.’

Now, 15 years later, Bear has reminded followers that his near brush with a bee was his most perilous to yet.

‘Throwback to a bad day in the wild! Man Vs African Bees… Man lost. #manvswild #adventure #anaphylacticshock #nevergiveup,’ he posted on Instagram.

Despite the spine-tingling reaction, Bear, 49, has had several close calls in the years afterwards.

He was filming the survival series Treasure Island in 2019 when he got stung while sailing by boat to a secluded island.

Contestants and the production crew’s medical team had to rush to aid him after he went into anaphylactic shock owing to his extreme allergy.

Mano Shanmuganathan, a brain surgeon who appeared on the show, told Daily Star at the time: ‘The irony of Bear the survivalist being stung, having the potential of an allergic reaction, and needing to be treated with an EpiPen, was a bizarre moment. That was crazy!’

When reflecting on finding out his severe allergy, Bear once said of that brutal first sting that it was a ‘brute’ and felt like ‘a price to pay for a bit of honey’.

‘The irony is, out of all of the massive, lethal, aggressive, man-eating crocs, snakes, alligators I’ve dealt with over the years, the one that gets me is a bee. It’s typical,’ he joked.

Bear Grylls is back on our screens with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, proving that a few little glitches will never stop him.

The current season of Running Wild has notable names such as Rita Ora, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Florence Pugh putting their limits to the test through a variety of insane tasks.

Bear Grylls: The Challenge is streaming on Disney Plus.
