Viewers praised Victoria Derbyshire‘s ‘excellent interviewing’ as she took over for Laura Kuenssberg on her new titular show.
In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter Lauren told her followers on Saturday: ‘Sorry everyone, I can’t make #bbcLaurak or #newscast this weekend – but don’t miss @vicderbyshire in the chair at 9 tomorrow on @BBCOne!’
Among the visitors on Sunday were Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey, and Rachel Johnson, the sister of ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Victoria Derbyshire grilled Mr Shapps on a variety of issues, including HS2, a planned high-speed train route from London, and climate promises.
When asked about HS2, he stated that it had been a ‘long since he had been transport secretary.’
The topic then shifted to Rishi Sunak’s recent declaration extending the prohibition on new petrol and diesel automobile sales and phasing out gas boilers until 2035.
The duo got into a heated argument. Victoria questioned Mr Shapps on statements he made earlier this year in which he said: ‘We have determined our route which is 2030 will see the end of new petrol and diesel.

‘By 2030, pure petrol and diesel will be available. That had always been the policy. The year 2035 has always been designated as the final phase out.’
Victoria later stated that she believed Mr Shapps was inaccurate and that the entire ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles will take effect in 2030, which the Defence Secretary stated was “incorrect.”
Fans appreciated Victoria’s interrogation and demanded that she be a regular presence on the show.

Victoria Derbyshire is wiping the floor with Grant Shapps! @bbclaurak take note, this is how you hold politicians to account! #BBCLauraK
Nice 1 Victoria! 😊— Pete Rigby (@PeteRIGBY) September 24, 2023
Victoria Derbyshire is an excellent interviewer holding people to account. Superb in not taking the Tory deception, deceit & evasion from Grant Shapps. Maybe she could be a permanent replacement for Laura K. #bbclaurak pic.twitter.com/txoNIcJQaA

So far Victoria Derbyshire has taken Grant Shapps to the cleaners, destroyed Tory MP Craig Mackinlay and is now making Ed Davey look a fool
More of this please #bbclaurak

Oooh. Laura K must have been watching Victoria Derbyshire & feeling a bit queasy. That’s how it’s done, Laura. #bbclaurak

Just watched Victoria Derbyshire on #bbclaurak give a masterclass in how to interview and hold politicians to account. Her razor sharp questions cut through the waffle as she pressed for answers to the questions asked. She would be excellent on #BBCqt
