Bafta TV Awards 2022: Viewers argue Sean Lock was ‘robbed’ after missing out on entertainment award: ‘Undeniably the funniest comic of our generation’

Viewers of the 2022 Baftas have voiced their frustration after Sean Lock was ‘snubbed’ of the award for entertainment performance.

Lock died on August 16 last year from cancer, at the age of 58, with his close friend Bill Bailey saying the comedian was diagnosed with ‘advanced’ lung cancer ‘a few years ago.’

The 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown favourite was nominated for his funny antics on the panel show, with some big names also in the category.

Alison Hammond, Graham Norton, Michael McIntyre, and Joe Lycett were also recognised, but the award went to Big Zuu for Big Zuu’s Big Eats.

Taking to Twitter to express their sadness that Lock wasn’t given the gong – straight after he was featured in the In Memoriam package – fans said he was their winner ‘all day long.’

‘Sean Lock, undeniably the funniest comic of our generation, snubbed,’ one Twitter user wrote.

Another acknowledged Big Zuu as a worthy winner, but paid tribute to Lock for being ‘a true inspiration’ and shaping their ‘sense of comedy.’

One wrote: ‘Big Zuu is a funny guy but an entertainment award has to go to Sean Lock.’

Another viewer commented that they were ‘lost for words’ upon seeing Lock lose out in the talented category, while one upset fan tweeted: ‘Sean Lock deserves this award, it would be a lovely tribute.’

However, one Bafta viewer said Lock wouldn’t have minded missing out on the gong, tweeting: ‘I’m pretty sure the great Sean Lock, if he were still here, wouldn’t give the first f*** that he didn’t win a Bafta over a new young entertainer, let alone not getting one after his death.’

When the heartbreaking news of Lock’s death was announced, a statement was released by Off the Kerb Productions, reading: ‘It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.

‘He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.’

Describing the entertainer as ‘one of Britain’s finest comedians’, the statement said that ‘his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy’.

‘Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children,’ it continued. ‘Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him. We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time.’

The ‘comedy legend’ and his one-liners were remembered in the Memoriam footage tonight, which also paid tribute to the likes of The Wanted singer Tom Parker, and EastEnders legend June Brown.

Elsewhere, other big winners at tonight’s Baftas included Jodie Comer and Sean Bean in the leading actress and actor categories, for their work on Help and Time respectively.

Gogglebox, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Together, and Coronation Street also took home gongs, while Strictly Come Dancing winners Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice were recognised for their ‘must-see’ silent routine.
