It’s A Sin fans were not happy after watching the 2022 Baftas after the series did not leave with a single award.
The poignant LGBTQ+ Channel 4 drama – starring Olly Alexander of Years & Years – was expected to clean up at the 75th Bafta TV awards, after receiving not one, not two, but six nominations.
However, the awards are being accused of ‘snubbing’ the Russell T Davis creation, with viewers outraged at how the cast and crew were ‘paid dust.’
The show’s snub came as even more of a shock after It’s A Sin took home two gongs at the British Academy Television Craft Awards on April 24.
It’s A Sin received a further five noms at the Craft Awards, taking home prizes after being recognised for direction, fiction, make-up and hair, casting, writing, and acting.
Taking to Twitter during tonight’s show, viewers expressed their anger at how the powerful drama series didn’t ‘sweep’ the board, branding it ‘the greatest television series I’ve ever seen,’ for its emotive storytelling of a group of friends living in London amid the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
One viewer wrote on Twitter: ‘The fact that It’s A Sin created such an incredible conversion around HIV/Aids, was one of the most talked about dramas last year and has walked away empty handed tonight with the BBC muting every clip is utterly baffling.’
A follower replied to their tweet, echoing their frustration: ‘Im gutted. That series spoke louder than anything i watched last year. Emotive, factual and so true to life in that era. A real tragedy it was not recognised.’
‘We’re all annoyed that It’s A Sin hasn’t won anything right? I think it’s actually a bit ridiculous,’ another tweeted.
‘I’m sorry but something is seriously wrong here!! It’s a Sin is one of the best series ever made, ever. They should have a mountain of awards,’ said one.
Others recognised that Sean Bean drama Time – which won the award for mini-series – was deserving of its award but still couldn’t believe It’s A Sin went home empty-handed.
‘I loved Time but It’s a sin not winning a bafta is criminal! The only show that made you cry and laugh at the same time – the most incredible writing and acting #robbed’, a fan shared.
It wasn’t just the awards snubbing that left It’s A Sin fans baffled and angry tonight after clips of the show seemed to be muted when shown in the nominees’ packages.
Clips of the critically-acclaimed drama seemed to appear without sound, with viewers questioning why different snippets couldn’t have been aired since the Baftas air pre-watershed.
It’s A Sin was also nominated in categories recognising individual cast members for their performances, including Lydia West for leading actress, with the away going to Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer for her work on Channel 4’s Help, meaning she now has two of the award.
Cast members stunned on the red carpet tonight, with the likes of Olly – who played Ritchie Tozer – wowing in a black cape and pair of killer heeled boots.
He was joined by Omari Douglas who, like Olly and Lydia, was previously in the running to be the 14th Time Lord on Doctor Who, before Ncuti Gatwa was announced to be taking Jodie Whittaker’s place earlier today.
Other big winners of tonight’s Baftas include the likes of Gogglebox, Coronation Street, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Strictly Come Dancing, and Together.
The ceremony was hosted by comedian Richard Ayoade and featured a range of guest presenters like Suranne Jones and Olivia Colman, with Alan Partridge even making an appearance.
