Bafta TV Awards 2021: Paul Mescal ‘would love’ to do Normal People season 2

Paul Mescal has said he ‘would love’ to do another series of hit TV show Normal People, as he picked up a Bafta TV award for his performance.

The 25-year-old actor, who played Connell on the TV show, an adaptation from Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name, said he had ‘a lot of feelings’ on his award, having given an emotional acceptance speech where he dedicated his win to his co-star and ‘best friend’, Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Noting the importance of her in his life and career, Paul was ready to share his love of for their show, but careful not to be drawn into too much talk of a Normal People season two.

He admitted: ‘I would love to do a season two.

‘I would work with Daisy again in a heartbeat, and regardless of the work or anything I’m just [always] really excited to see her.’

But before anyone could get too carried away with any rumours he may have unwittingly started, Paul laughingly clarified: ‘There’s nothing at all in the pipeline.’

As Paul discussed his win in the leading actor category, he shared that fame hadn’t been an issue for him as it meant he ‘got to go to work’, something for which he felt ‘incredibly privileged’.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk on finding fame during lockdown, he said: ‘I’ve no idea what the opposite of that would look like. I have no complaints with it. I got to go to work after the kind of craziness of last summer.’

The performer also shared his delight at attending the Bafta awards again, as he continued: ‘It’s been, like, a weird year and it kind of feels full circle, having presented here last year, to be in a room with people – not just people, like literally people at the forefront of television at the moment – and it was really quite special, quite emotional.’

Paul also spoke about the clip at the start of the show, which shows highlights from the past year of television, describing its effect on him.

‘It really makes me feel quite proud of what collectively as artists we’re putting out into the world.’
