Due to the fact that the most recent season of Happy Valley was shown seven years ago, it has been a very lengthy wait to get caught up with the characters of the show.
However, the much-beloved television series has returned, and much like the two seasons that came before it, the upcoming third season will also consist of six episodes.
The fact that the series is still being written by Sally Wainwright, who has previously contributed to Emmerdale and Coronation Street in addition to penning Last Tango in Halifax, gives viewers confidence that they will be in for a pleasant surprise.
This time around, Sergeant Catherine Cawood, played by Sarah Lancashire, is getting close to retiring from the police department when she discovers the skeletal remains of a gangland murder victim, which finally leads her back to Tommy Lee Royce, played by James Norton, who raped her late daughter.
After the conclusion of the second season, Tommy was locked up in prison, and his son Ryan, played by Rhys Connah, was interested in learning more about his father.
Ryan is now 16 years old and has his own ideas about the kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father, leaving Catherine’s sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) caught in the middle. This information was revealed by the BBC in a synopsis for the third season.
After receiving a report concerning bones, Catherine is instructed to execute a U-turn in her police cruiser in the first five minutes of the pilot episode, which were broadcast earlier this week. In the clip, Catherine is shown being forced to make the manoeuvre.
After parking her car at a reservoir in Yorkshire, she was shown a human skeleton that had washed up on the shore, and the investigation began from that point on.
Since it first premiered, the entire series has taken place in the same location throughout.
Where is Happy Valley filmed?
Happy Valley is set in the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire, in Northern England.
Titled after what the local police refer to the area as because of its drug problem, in the series Catherine’s sister Clare is a recovering drug addict herself.
Since the show started filming in 2013, locations like Todmorden, Luddenden, Mytholmroyd, Bradford, Keighley, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, and Heptonstall have all been seen on screen.
Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds and other West Yorkshire cities have also been mentioned, but are not main filming locations.
A former police station (Station Road, Sowerby Bridge) has been used as the set for Catherine’s workplace, while her home and local pub are based in Hebden Bridge.
The prison scenes were filmed at Oakham Enterprise Park in Rutland.
