Anne Reid reveals how she broke her arm after spending six hours in A&E days before Christmas

Anne Reid, actress of Last Tango in Halifax and former Coronation Street, has recounted how she shattered her arm only days before Christmas, forcing her to visit A&E.

Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas invited the acclaimed actress into the BBC One studio on Tuesday to discuss her new drama Marjorie Prime.

Her arm, however, was supported by a sling, which concerned former professional footballer Jermaine, who said, ‘Your arm – how is it, how are you doing?’

On December 20, last year, the 87-year-old tweeted: ‘Last Thursday night I spent six hours in A&E at @NHSEnglandLDN #UCLH with a fractured arm. I can’t thank the nurses and physicians enough for their kindness and compassion.’

Anne informed Lauren and Jermaine that she injured her arm just under a fortnight before Christmas while attempting to hang a Christmas ornament.

‘I fell off a ladder putting up a Christmas decoration at Christmas,’ she explained, before confessing how tough some chores in her daily life had been without being able to use both of her hands.

‘I didn’t realise how many times you need both hands. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to put a bra on with one hand,’ the former Dinnerladies star quipped.

‘Not quite, no,’ an amused Jermaine responded to their guest’s remark.

Anne conceded that while she ‘cracked’ her elbow, ‘it’s alright’ and ‘getting better’ after adding that she also found it difficult to tie her shoelaces.

‘You’re in recovery, that’s what we like to hear,’ Jermaine stated.

When Anne disclosed on Twitter that she had fractured a limb, she received an outpouring of sympathy, including Doctor Who actor Bonnie Langford, who said, ‘Wishing you better soon, Annie xx.’

One fan tweeted: ‘Oh no! Wishing you a speedy recovery and a very happy Christmas, Anne,’ while another commented at the time: ‘That’s sweet of you to give the staff a positive shout out! Best wishes for a swift recovery.’

During her appearance on The One Show, Anne also disclosed a text message she wrote to her former co-star Sarah Lancashire on her performance in Happy Valley, telling her, ‘You are one of the finest actors on the globe.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
