Andrew Neil has spoken more about the ongoing negotiations between Piers Morgan and GB News, saying that the presenter ‘has a different idea of what he’s worth’ to the channel.
Andrew previously confirmed that Piers is fully in talks to join GB News after quitting Good Morning Britain earlier this year following a record number of complaints about his remarks dismissing Meghan Markle.
He’s been linked with a move to Andrew’s incoming GB News ever since, with the channel launching this weekend.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Andrew said that while he wants Piers to sign up a deal has yet to be agreed.
‘It would be nice to have him, but he’s got his own idea of what he is worth and we have a slightly different idea of what he’s worth,’ he said.
‘He is in a lucky situation because ITV are continuing to pay him a tonne of money so he doesn’t have to do anything in the short run. I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere else in the UK.’
Andrew went on to speculate about Piers’ career, saying: ‘If he has a huge American offer that’s a different matter. No one in the UK can compete with that but if he’s going to do more UK news TV I hope it will be with us.’
GB News – the UK’s first new news channel in 30 years – is set to launch this Sunday, with journalists including former BBC newsreader Simon McCoy, former ITV presenter Alastair Stewart, presenter Kirsty Gallacher, The Apprentice’s Michelle Dewberry and former The Sun executive editor Dan Wootton signed up to the team.
Critics suggested that the channel would be a British version of Fox News. However, Neil, who is chairman of GB News and will be hosting a nightly show, has denied that the channels will only be similar in format.
