The viral lockdown game will be adapted for television in an animated series called Among Us.
Although it was initially published in 2018, the space-themed game took off during the pandemic in 2020, with 100 million downloads by the end of the year, with the unexpected rise in players overloaded the game’s server.
Following The Last of Us’ enormous success, the video game is now the next in line to get the small screen treatment.
The TV series is being produced by CBS, who have teamed up with Innersloth, the independent game studio behind Among Us to develop the series, as first reported by Variety.
Owen Dennis, the inventor of Infinity Train, will act as the project’s creator and executive producer.
The synopsis for the series has also been announced and teases that: ‘Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the “Impostor” or fall victim to its murderous designs.’
While the game has millions of admirers, many couldn’t believe the news that it will be converted into a programme.
‘Is this really a thing?’ one person posted on Twitter.
‘There’s no way they’re actually making an Among Us TV show,’ someone else wrote.
Another added: ‘OMG! This is what we needed! Finally, our favourite game comes on TV. I can’t wait to see how Among Us will be adapted and played in the show.’
Titmouse (Big Mouth and Star Trek: Lower Decks) will produce the show, although it has yet to be disclosed on which network or streaming site it will broadcast.
Among Us peaked at number one on Google Play in 66 countries and was in the top 100 in all countries but two in October 2020.
It was also the most popular app on iOS in 55 countries.
By the end of that year, it had approximately 500 million monthly active users, over 4 billion YouTube views, and over 1.22 billion Twitch viewing sessions.
Several additional well-known video game adaptations are in the works.
Amazon revealed earlier this month that it will be developing a series based on the Angry Birds mobile game.
The animated series from Eric Rogers (Futurama) and Titmouse, titled Angry Birds Mystery Island, will star Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Kate Micucci (Scooby-Doo! ), Dominic Monaghan (The Lord of the Rings), and Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live).
The first season will consist of 24 episodes and promises “plenty of fun, intrigue, and adventure with irreverent humour and pop cultural allusions.”
A Minecraft film starring Jason Momoa is also set to be released in 2025.
