After receiving a fair share of claims that past seasons of Britain’s Got Talent were “fixed,” Amanda Holden has promised that this year’s competition would go back to its roots.
The 52-year-old has stated that the 2019 season of the talent competition would feature more amateur performers. Last year, impressionist Suzi Wild, singer Loren Allred from The Greatest Showman, and comic Axel Blake all revealed to be professionals in their own fields.
Since David Walliams has been replaced by Bruno Tonioli, Amanda, Simon Cowell, and Alesha Dixon have all returned. She acknowledged that this year’s auditions have been more “homegrown.”
She said: “It feels more homegrown” before the series premiered on our televisions.
‘It feels like stuff people would be doing in their bedrooms and less professionals this year, but the standard is still exceptionally high.
‘Last year, we had a lot of people who had struggled professionally because of
lockdown.
‘A lot of people that needed to remind themselves and their audience that they could do it.
‘And it was great for us to be able to give them that platform after what had been a very tough time for performers.
‘But this year, I think it’s evened out again and it’s back to more amateur, homegrown, people queuing up and coming in.
‘So I’ve really enjoyed seeing that!’
Talking about the standard of talent on stage, the judge added: ‘Even though I say it’s more amateurs giving it a go, the standard is still really high.
‘For the first time in a long time I have absolutely no idea who might win, it really
could be anyone.’
Last year, Golden Buzzer act Loren addressed the ‘fix’ claims, saying: ‘Even though I have spent a lot of years in the music industry, people don’t know who I am. Over all these years I’ve been fighting for my chance to be known and to make it.’
Speaking after one of her performances, Simon added: ‘I also know you got a bit of stick in the media saying, “Well, you know it’s a fix because you’ve been on another show.”
‘Well that’s the whole point of shows like this, is that you give people a second chance.’
Britain’s Got Talent returns to ITV1 at 8pm on Saturday, April 15.
