Alison Steadman reveals she’s ‘waiting to hear’ about a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special

Alison Steadman has revealed she’s ‘waiting to hear’ about the prospect of a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special this year, saying that she ‘honestly’ doesn’t know whether it will take place.

Last month, Gavin and Stacey star and co-writer Ruth Jones appeared to rule out the possibility of another festive special for the comedy television show, stating: ‘There aren’t any plans to write anything.’

Last year’s hour-long Gavin and Stacey Christmas special ended on a cliffhanger, with Nessa (Ruth) proposing to Smithy (James Corden).

While speaking about the prospect of another surprise TV reunion, Alison – who played Pam on the sitcom – said that ‘everything’s very quiet’.

During an interview on BBC Morning Live on Thursday, co-presenter Gethin Jones said to Alison: ‘We are excited about the potential of another Christmas special this year. I know you are all in a group chat, on the phone. What’s the latest chat going on there at the moment?’

In response, Alison, 74, said: ‘Well look, this announcement’s been made but James and Ruth haven’t said anything to us and everything’s very quiet.

‘They’ve obviously got to write this thing which is an enormous task. So, honestly we don’t know. We’re waiting to hear like everyone else.’

Alison added that when Ruth contacted her about participating in last year’s festive episode, she was left ‘breathless’ with excitement.

James recently addressed whether Gavin and Stacey could return again in the future, telling Metro.co.uk for Sixty Seconds: ‘All of us and Matt [Horne] and Jo [Page] did a special radio show for BBC Wales the other day that will go out on Christmas. And we all contributed to that somewhat.’

James expressed his hope that another special will be released, stating: ‘The next one will really be the last, final part.’

‘And that is a little too much pressure for my chest to take at the moment, if I’m honest, in amongst the anxiety of 2020,’ he added.

‘If I had any notion of trying to make another Christmas special I don’t think I’d be able to breathe. So we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.’

Gavin and Stacey is available to watch on Britbox and BBC iPlayer.
