Former England football star Alex Scott shared an emotional moment as she looked back on growing up with an abusive father.
The 38-year-old, who made her first appearance on Loose Women, talked about her new book How (Not) To Be Strong, where she reveals her amazing journey, from her troubled childhood to her successful football career.
The ex-Strictly Come Dancing contestant admitted that her relationship with her father and witnessing her parents’ conflicts affected her ability to find love as an adult.
When host Ruth Langsford asked her how hard it was for her and her brother to see their mum suffer at the hands of their dad, Alex said with tears in her eyes: ‘It’s hard, because we felt helpless and we wanted to protect our mum and she was doing the same for us.’
She continued: ‘I actually thought because the paperback comes out tomorrow “I’m in a better place, I can talk about it,” but then you get the images in your head and it brings you back to those moments that are hard.
‘You’re just lying in bed listening to everything hoping and praying your mum is going to survive the night.
‘And that’s why my mum is my everything, I want to give her the world and people who are survivors of domestic abuse have their lives taken away from them. They think they’re weak and I want to show my mum, and I keep telling her how incredible and amazing she is and she isn’t weak and she actually rescued me and my brother.’
Alex had previously opened up about her childhood while being a guest on an episode of Steven Bartlett’s podcast, The Diary of a CEO.
In the emotional chat, Alex told the Dragon’s Den star about the ‘worst night’ of her life, where she heard her father with her mother after a birthday party.
She said: ‘I’m in a room hearing everything go on, and just hoping she’s alive.’
The unstable and frightening environment made Alex look for her own way of comfort and escape, which she found in sport.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12: 30pm on ITV.
