Alec Baldwin’s Match Game cancelled by ABC after months off-air

Alec Baldwin’s ABC show Match Game is not expected to continue.

The game show last aired in summer 2021 and was not renewed last May when the network made its decisions on what shows it would pick up the following year.

Likewise, ABC makes pick-ups in late autumn for the forthcoming summer, but the show was also not renewed.

The news comes as the investigation continues into tahe death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after Baldwin fatally shot her on set of his project Rust.

Multiple lawsuit have been filed, but the tragedy is said to not be linked to Match Game’s cancellation, since it has been off air for a while.

Variety reports that the show has not been in production since before the Covid pandemic hit in 2020 and only two new episodes aired in 2021, which were leftover from the previous year.

The outlet adds that Match Game isn’t the only show unlikely to return, with Card Sharks, Celebrity Dating Game and The Hustler, also thought to be cut.

On the other hand, fan favourites Celebrity Family Feud, Press Your Luck and The $100,000 Pyramid are expected for renewal.

Match Game was revived by ABC in 2016, with Baldwin at the helm for five seasons.

The most recent instalment was filmed pre-Covid and nine episodes were televised between May and October of 2020.

The final two hit screens on July 21 and July 28, 2021.

As for the show’s format, Match Game centred around four contestants who competed to win $25,000 (£19,000).

To take home the cash, hopefuls had to match the answers of six celebrities in a game of fill-in-the-blank, much like the UK’s much-loved Blankety Blank.

Originally, the show premiered way back in 1962 with Gene Rayburn as its host, and has been revived several times since.

As for Baldwin, the 63-year-old is currently expecting his seventh child with wife Hilaria, 38.

The actor will soon be a father-of-eight, since he shares daughter Ireland Baldwin, 26, with ex-wife Kim Basinger, 68.

He has been spotted reading scripts in an Italian city in recent days as he prepares to start work on a new movie, five months on from the Rust tragedy, which involved him discharging a bullet from a prop gun.

Production was shut down immediately afterwards, and police continue their enquires, with director Joel Souza also injured.
