Alan Carr was left devastated on the latest episode of DNA Journey after learning about his war hero ancestor who was killed during an air raid.
The comedian and presenter appeared on the ITV series with friend Amanda Holden, both hoping to uncover truths about their family.
Alan learned on the programme that he was descended from a soldier who had been awarded The Red Cross Medal for his efforts in the First World War.
His ancestor, Zachariah Coles, had served in the navy during the war, before working as an engineer in the Red Cross ambulance boats in Mesopotamia – modern day Iraq.
‘He was awarded the Red Cross Medal. You may be wondering where he served and what he actually did,’ Dr Michala Hulme said on the show.
‘He would have been transporting injured soldiers, supplies, goods…really vital pieces of equipment,’ she told Alan, with Amanda by his side.
Dr Michala also revealed that Zachariah later became a pub landlord in 1939, but met a sad end during an air raid during World War two.
Describing the upsetting event, Dr Michala said: ‘He was literally stood on the door step of the pub and a bomb went off in front of him in the street. He and several other people were killed in the explosion.’
Alan was left visibly upset by the story, and was comforted by Amanda when he said: ‘That’s so horrible.’
The episode also saw Alan leave Amanda shocked by revealing he was ‘outed as gay to his mother by a ouija board’ during a spooky reading.
Speaking about his coming out story, Alan revealed his mother Christine had a calling from ‘the other side’ letting her know about his sexuality.
‘Me and my mum used to do the ouija board – don’t do that,’ he told her. ‘I got outed by a ouija board.’
DNA Journey continues on Wednesdays at 9pm on ITV.
