After Life’s last season drops on Netflix on Friday – but creator Ricky Gervais has refused to rule out a future potential comeback.

Fans will catch up with widow Tony Johnson (Ricky Gervais) for the final time when the six new episodes come to the streaming service this week.

Local reporter Tony struggles with depression following the death of his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) as viewers have seen him attempt to navigate his grief.

Many were gutted after Ricky confirmed the show would come to an end after its third season, and it seems they’re not the only ones.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other press, the star teased the potential of revisiting After Life and revealed what it would take for him to be persuaded to do so.

Ricky said: ‘I am pretty sure it is the final season, 99% sure… never say never.

‘I don’t know… could I be persuaded? Well, of course.

‘Netflix could offer me a castle and an animal sanctuary on an island…. But at this moment, in time? No, this is it.’

Jo Hartley, who plays June, James’ doting mum and girlfriend of Tony’s hapless best friend Lenny (Tony Way), also expressed her sadness over the finale and her desire to work with Ricky again.

Chatting ahead of season three, she said of the series ending: ‘It feels a little bit sad. But I don’t want to kind of get too down on it.

‘It’s been great, a big gift in my life really and I know that we’ll work with Ricky again.

‘I mean, the other night, I said “Oh what are we doing now we’re finished, and Ricky said, “We’ll just do something else.”

‘I think he’s finished it at the right time but I think he could do it Christmas Special!’

The season will pick up shortly after the death of Tony’s father Ray (David Bradley), who was battling dementia.

The creator explained a slight change ahead of this time around, as he ‘honed in’ on the core cast, and decided to bring a selection of characters more to the forefront.

He said: ‘It was much more about the core characters, we really honed it down,

‘Even though we sort of spread out to about 18 main characters, with this one, we concentrate on the main sort of five or six, I think.’

After Life season 3 lands on Netflix on Friday, January 14.
