Ricky Gervais has opened up about After Life coming to an end with season 3, admitting that he ‘wishes’ he could continue for a fourth series… but has reason not to.
Ever since the drama premiered on Netflix in March 2019, it has received critical acclaim, with creator Ricky starring as the main character Tony Johnson, a man whose life is turned upside down when his wife dies.
After Life is the first drama written and directed by Ricky that he’s taken to three seasons, having usually finished TV shows with two seasons and a special, as was the case with The Office and Extras.
When asked in an interview why he’s chosen to end After Life with the upcoming batch of episodes, the comedian said that ‘every time someone asks that I get a little adrenaline rush wishing it wasn’t it and I could do a fourth’.
Speaking to Deadline, he said: ‘I know for a fact I could. But the reason I said it is definitely the end is so I’d be bullied and made fun of for going back on it.’
The actor said that it’s a ‘no brainer I should do a fourth’, with reasons including ‘economics’ and the fact that ‘the audience would love it’.
‘Everything points towards it except would series four be as good as the first three and actually better because it’s no good for it to be just as good. I don’t want it to outstay its welcome,’ he added.
In May 2020, Ricky struck a multi-year deal with Netflix, which was said to have been worth eight figures.
The 60-year-old will make a new show as part of the deal, with Ricky revealing that he’s ‘got it down to three possible ideas and one is edging its way’.
‘You better make the right decision. Not only do you want it to be good, you want it to be fun. I don’t want to do a series that’s brilliant and wins all the awards, but that I didn’t enjoy doing,’ he explained.
‘I want every minute of the day to be fun, the writing in the acting, the directing, the editing and then talking about it afterwards. I can buy anything but time, so that’s the most important thing.’
After Life season three launches on Netflix on January 14.
