If you’re looking for a terrific new Netflix series, odds are you’ll consult the critics to help you determine what to watch next.
After all, achieving a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is something that many shows and films can only dream of, as only a few works are so popular with critics throughout the world that they receive the coveted flawless score.
As it happens, three shows have lately launched on the streaming platform, leaving the 100% rating in their wake, providing viewers with lots of excellent new viewing alternatives for the upcoming weekend.
Find out which new shows have scored the magic figure.
1. Supacell
Supacell, brought to us by Rapman, the creator of the 2019 film Blue Story, takes the superhero concept to the odd setting of South London.
The cast also includes some recognised faces, including as former Doctor Who companion Tosin Cole and The Responder’s Adelayo Adedayo.
The plot revolves around a group of people living in south London who learn they have superpowers, and the man who must bring them together to save the lady he loves.
In addition to being a fan favourite and receiving approval from Jay Z, the show has received excellent reviews from reviewers.
The Evening Standard said: ‘Does it work? Yes. The whole thing hangs together, thanks to the engaging cast (almost all of them are fresh faces), and the well-executed action sequences.’
Meanwhile Variety added: ‘Supacell has the familiar and sometimes predictable themes found in these types of projects… Still, Rapman’s exploration of what it means for Black people specifically to gain powers makes the show unique’
2. Savage Beauty
When the first season of Savage Beauty premiered on the streaming platform in 2022, it was an instant smash with both viewers and critics.
The South African drama follows a woman who, in an attempt to avenge a tragic past, joins a powerful family that runs a global beauty company while also concealing their own secrets.
With the first series topping the charts in 14 countries, it’s no surprise that a second season will be released on Netflix on June 28.
Once again the show is proving popular with critics, with Decider saying: ‘Savage Beauty continues to be an enjoyable, pulpy series, even if there might not be as much of material about classism and colorism that was in Season 1.’
The audience is enjoying it too, with one viewer writing: ‘Great production, beautiful scenes, and as always great African show.’
It’s also a hit with viewers on X with Veeiye saying: ‘Everyone that worked on Savage Beauty needs to clap for themselves. Top tier show!’ Zepoo added: ‘Everyone delivered on this show, everyone. Behind and front’.
3. The Mole
Missing the traitors? Counting the days until the next series? Well, this Netflix sensation, which has recently returned for its second season, should help pass the time till Claudia Winkleman and co. return.
The Mole, a remake of a game show that aired on US television from 2001 to 2008, features 12 participants competing in a series of challenges to add money to a prize pool – only one of their number has been assigned as a’mole’, whose duty is to sabotage their efforts as much as possible.
At the end of the game, the last participant standing must uncover the’mole’ in order to win the money. However, in an added twist, the spectators have no idea who it is.
While we’re waiting to see how the rest of the series pans out – with episodes being released weekly – the show’s already picking up great reviews. Decider said: ‘The Mole is a sturdy formula for a reality competition. We’re not quite sold on the new host yet, but the rest of it is as solid as the first season was in 2022.’
That series also bagged the covered 100%, with IndieWire among those singing its praises as they wrote: ‘The Mole hits a different but powerfully satisfying note with its convoluted challenges, mind games, and sabotage. It’s both cerebral and physical – even when viewed from the couch – an interesting confluence of 2022 itself’.
