After labouring through his Glastonbury performance, Lewis Capaldi has stated that he will be taking a hiatus from touring for the foreseeable future, apologising sincerely to his fans.
‘Hello everyone,’ writes the Someone You Loved singer in an Instagram message. First and foremost, thank you to Glastonbury for hosting me, for singing along when I needed it, and for all the kind messages that followed. It truly means everything.’
‘The fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it any easier to write, but I’m extremely sad to let you know I’m going to be taking a sabbatical from touring for the foreseeable future,’ the artist wrote.
The 26-year-old stated that he used to relish ‘every second’ of his live gigs, and that he had thought that his three-week hiatus would’sort me up’ before his Glastonbury appearance on the Pyramid Stage.
However, he added that he’s ‘still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s’, outlining that on Saturday during his performance, when the crowd helped to sing his song while he was experienced difficulties, it ‘became obvious’ to him that he needs to ‘spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for along time to come’.
The Bruises artist continued: ‘I know I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to take some time out when others can’t and I’d like to thank my amazing family, friends, team, medical professionals and all of you who’ve been so supportive every step of the way through the good times and even more so during this past year when I’ve needed it more than ever.’
Concluding his heartfelt statement, Lewis said: ‘I’m so incredibly sorry to everyone who had planned to come to a show before the end of the year but I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve.
‘Playing for you every night is all I’ve ever dreamed of so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I’ll be back as soon as I possibly can. All my love, always, Lewis x.’
The Brit Award-winning and Grammy-nominated performer was slated to play tonight in Zürich, Switzerland, with more tour dates planned in Spain, Germany, and South Korea in the coming months.
Fans and celebrities rushed to the comments to offer messages of support, with Laura Whitmore writing: ‘It’s very brave to make this decision and everyone will be still here when you come back ( listening to the album on repeat!) We love you Lewis ♥️x.’
Stacey Dooley commented with a heart emoji, while Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg wrote: ‘We love you.’
TV personality Kate Lawler added: ‘Kate Lawler: The right decisions are often the hardest ones to make. Get well soon and your comeback will be magical.’
Lewis issued a statement before to his return to the Glastonbury stage, explaining that he has opted to abandon all engagements leading up to the event.
In the message published on June 5, he wrote: ‘The last few months have been full on both mentally and physically, I haven’t been home properly since Christmas and at the moment I’m struggling to get to grips with it all.
‘I need to take a moment to rest and recover, to be at my best and ready for Glastonbury and all of the other incredible shows coming up so that I’m able to continue doing what I love for a long time to come.’
He also added that he was ‘getting all the help and support I need from the incredible people around me who I’m so grateful for’.
During his Glastonbury performance, Lewis struggled to sing his song in its entirety, prompting thousands of fans in the audience to show their support by shouting out the words in unison, in one of the most poignant moments of the 2023 event.
He told the audience at the gig: ‘Sorry, I’m a bit annoyed at myself.’
While expressing his fear, he thanked the festivalgoers for putting him at rest.
On social media, celebrities such as Piers Morgan and Dan Walker voiced their support for Lewis, with the former tweeting: ‘‘Wow. This was amazing. Kudos to @LewisCapaldi for not quitting – and kudos to the #glastonbury2023 crowd for singing him through his obvious issues.’
