Scream slashes box office competition as horror sequel debuts at number one

It also did well across the globe, with Hollywood Reporter stating it grossed $18m (£13m) worldwide with $3.4m (£2.4m) in the UK.

This beat the opening weekend of Scream 4, which was released in 2011 to an opening of $19.3m (£14m).

Not too shabby…

The latest film in the Scream franchise hit the big screen on Friday to rave reviews – with Metro.co.uk giving it an impressive 4.5 stars.

‘Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, California, a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past,’ the official synopsis reads.

The tagline piles on the suspense, adding: ‘It’s always someone you know.’

Ever since the horror sequel was announced, fans have been perched on the edge of their seats in anticipation for who could be under the Ghostface mask.

It turns out some members of the Scream cast were also completely in the dark, confessing to Metro.co.uk that they were totally clueless about the ending.

In fact, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett handed out scripts with different scenes to keep suspicion up and ensure nothing was leaked before the official release.

‘Definitely the first script that I read was a different ending,’ Melissa, who played Sam Carpenter, told us.

‘Then when we all arrived in Wilmington and we had our first table read, we were only given up until page 80, the end of the second act.

‘So in the table read we didn’t know what the actual ending was going to be. It kept us with a dynamic of suspecting each other.’

Jack, who joined the cast as Richie, agreed: ‘It was weird, it was so meta! We were making a whodunnit and we’re also, as actors, trying to figure out who is playing the killer.

‘It’s so weird, it was so strange.’

Scream is in cinemas now.
