If we didn’t already know, further proof has arisen that Ryan Gosling is the ideal Ken.
The highly anticipated Barbie film, which also stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll, is slated to hit theatres on July 21, and we can’t wait.
So much so that there is an international shortage of pink paint, and the pinkest, most wonderful, most plastic Barbiecore fashion trends are sweeping the country.
Our Barbie period arrives just as we thought summer couldn’t be much better. Hurrah!
But something else has been brewing: Kenergy, a term developed by the 42-year-old Drive actor.
Although it’s difficult to define Kenergy, we’re getting a better sense of it now that a trailer for the next film has been released.

In it, an ‘injured’ Ken reclines on a pink hospital bed, with a pink gown, and a worried expression, apparently scuffed from a surfing incident.
When Barbie doctor – portrayed by Hari Nef – promised him he would be ‘fine’ and that nothing was broken, our well-groomed Ken sighed a palpable sigh of relief.
‘Shredding waves is much more dangerous than people realise,’ exclaimed Ryan in the hilarious scene.
When Barbie said, ‘You’re very brave Ken’ he gave some tremendous Kenergy and swung his head about.
Ken then said the most heartfelt thank you we’ve ever heard before milking the remark even more.
He continued: ‘You know surfing isn’t even my job, and it is not lifeguard, which is a common misconception.
‘Because actually, my job, it’s just “beach”,’ he added, to his nodding onlookers, who looked fairly exasperated.
After then being told that he really was fine – and in fact, absolutely nothing was wrong – a now elated Ken hot off the heels of Barbie’s admiring words, said: ‘Hey Barbie, can I come to your house tonight?’
Ryan crossed his fingers and closed his eyes tightly, playing it as calm as the equator.
‘Sure. I don’t have anything planned tonight, just a big giant blow out party with all the Barbies, and planned choreography and a bespoke song. You should stop by,’ replied a confident Margot (who actually seemed to have quite a lot on).
‘So cool,’ replied an infatuated Ken, as Barbie – totally unphased – said goodbye.
If Ryan’s hilarious timing in this clip – and the accompanying trailer – is any indication, he’ll be the perfect Ken.
‘It comes with a lot of baggage!’ the Wolf of Wall Street star told British Vogue in June 2021 of his new plastic role.
‘And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear “Barbie” and think, I know what that movie is going to be, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, Oh, well, maybe I don’t….’
Fans don’t appear to be concerned, as others have stated that Ryan nailed the scenario.
One said: ‘I LOVE how committed Ryan Gosling is to his role. he is going to be the highlight of this movie.’
Another wrote: ‘Ryan gosling is the greatest actor of all time, this is literally the funniest thing I’ve seen this year purely because of his mannerisms.’
‘This was the role Ryan Gosling was born to play,’ said someone else in a comment which went viral.
Meanwhile, Will Ferrell is set to play the CEO of toy company Mattel, along with Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera, SNL’s Kate McKinnon, Marvel’s Simu Liu, Insecure’s Issa Rae, new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, Emerald Fennell, and Emma Mackey, among others, as the Barbie movie is said to feature multiple Barbies and Kens.
Ryan will be singing some melodies (yeah, thrilling) with Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Lizzo (! ), Nicki Minaj, Pink Pantheress, Tame Impala, and The Kid Laroi on the soundtrack.
Barbie is out in cinemas on July 21.
