Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has revealed that she was worried that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s first kiss in the show was so steamy it was ‘illegal’.
Catherine has described how she was worried about the intense chemistry between Robert, who was 21 at the time, and Kristen, who was 17.
Speaking on The Big Hit Show podcast, the filmmaker, 66, said: ‘I could tell they had a lot of chemistry, and I’m like, “Oh my God.”
‘I thought, Kristen was 17. I don’t want to get in some illegal things.’
In California, the legal age of consent is 18, and Catherine felt compelled to remind Robert of this after he fell off the bed when the two actors kissed during the audition carried out at her Los Angeles home.
The Red Riding Hood and Thirteen director said: ‘Rob and Kristen did the audition right here on the bed. They did the kissing scene and he fell off and landed right there on this floor.’
She also recalled how she didn’t think R-Patz looked the part of the immortal vampire Edward Cullen when he first came in for his audition.
‘[Rob] walked in and he had his hair dyed black for some play, with these wacky bangs. He was a bit out of shape,’ she continued. ‘His shirt was just all messy, and I’m like, ‘Oh, OK. OK, let’s see how this goes.’
When the audition had finished, Kristen told Catherine that Cullen had to be played by the Batman actor.
Speaking to the New Yorker in November 2021, Kristen said that she wanted Robert to play Cullen and that the kissing in the audition was pivotal to her decision. She said: ‘It was so clear who worked’.
Kristen and Robert began dating in 2009, but split a few years later after it emerged that she was having an affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders.
The couple split for good in 2013, but Robert confirmed in 2019 that they were on good terms with one another.
In Breaking Dawn, the couple filmed a racy sex scene, with Robert’s character ripping through a pile of pillows.
Speaking at the time, the actor recalled how: ‘I bit through all the pillows. Every. Single. One. And then he’d start crying.’
‘By the way, that’s what he should be ashamed of in the morning’.
