This year’s Oscar nominations have been announced, with The Power of the Dog leading the way on 12 nods, and plenty of love for Dune, Belfast and West Side Story – but it’s all change in the acting categories.
The 94th annual Academy Awards is on Sunday March 27 and set to return in style this time with the regular number of nominees and guests attending after the Covid pandemic prevented a normal ceremony from taking place in 2021.
The show will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and will be televised live in the United States on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide as it announces this year’s winners.
Alongside additions and exclusions for performances, Spider-Man, No Time To Die and Sir Ridley Scott where shut out of main categories, while Being the Ricardos popped up as a contender.
After Bafta revealed their awards list last week, here’s a rundown of the 2022 Oscars’ biggest snubs and surprises…
Lady Gaga snubbed
Despite a lot of noise around her performance and a Bafta nomination, Lady Gaga has been dropped from the leading actress category for her bold performance as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci.
The film follows the true story of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver)’s murder and his ex-wife Reggiani (Lady Gaga), who was convicted of hiring the hitman who killed him in 1995 – years after their marriage fell apart.
No love for Sir Ridley Scott
On that note, Sir Ridley Scott saw both of his 2021 films, House of Gucci and The Last Duel, almost entirely shut out by the Academy, save for a solitary nomination for House of Gucci’s make-up and hairstyling (Jared Leto’s physical transformation into the portly, balding Paolo Gucci alone is surely worth the recognition).
Leto himself has also missed out on a supporting actor nod, meaning his acting won’t see him in contention for both a Razzie (well, two actually) and an Oscar for the same part.
The director famously blamed The Last Duel’s box office failure on ‘millennials and cell phones’ after the film made just $27million (£20m) worldwide off a $100million (£74m) budget.
Spider-Man fails to strike in major categories
After a kerfuffle with submission for the Baftas, Spider-Man: No Way Home wasn’t going to make the same mistake again with the Oscars.
Unfortunately, it didn’t matter in the end as the superhero movie, which garnered positive reviews and was the first film to pass $1billion at the box office post-pandemic, failed to snag a best picture nomination.
It was also left out of other major categories, with its one single nod coming for visual effects.
No Time To Die gets one nod
A movie met with mostly positive reviews, and considered a fitting send-off for Daniel Craig in his last outing as James Bond, No Time To Die hasn’t seen much buzz this award’s season.
It picked up one nomination for best song, for its titular track written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, which debuted at number one on the Official UK Charts back in February 2020 when it was initially released.
Dune’s 10 nominations don’t include best director
Dune might have (almost) swept the board – behind The Power of the Dog – with 10 nominations, but there was again no best director recognition for Denis Villeneuve.
He was shut out at the Baftas too alongside Steven Spielberg, but Spielberg was let into the Oscars race for his work helming the new adaptation of West Side Story.
All change for best actor
A film that didn’t make much of a splash in the UK, Being the Ricardos claimed a handful of Oscar nominations.
Its leads Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are in the leading actress and actor categories, while JK Simmons has also been nominated for best supporting actor.
Being the Ricardos follows real-life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz during the making of Ball’s iconic 1950s TV show I Love Lucy, as they deal with personal and professional crises.
The 94 Academy Awards will take place on March 27.
