Nicolas Cage reveals one thing he wouldn’t do again in acting career

Nicolas Cage is an actor with a rabid fan base, thanks to his distinctive and sometimes odd performances in films.

His most recent appearance is as Count Dracula in the horror-comedy Renfield, which follows the vampire’s titular familiar and manservant and his desperate attempt to break free from their toxic, co-dependent relationship.

We’ve already heard from the 59-year-old that he wore his fearsome fangs at home to polish his wicked accent – and even unintentionally swallowed his own blood during filming.

He has confessed, however, that he has one regret from his career, and that is swallowing a live bug for his role in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss.

‘I’ll never do that again. I’m sorry I did it at all,’ he told Yahoo Entertainment.

‘I ate [roaches] twice because the director did it just to prank me,’ he added to co-star Nicholas Hoult, who plays the bug-consuming character this time around in Renfield.

with Vampire’s Kiss, Cage’s character, selfish yuppie Peter Loew, thinks himself that he has been transformed into a vampire by Jennifer Beals and walks out with false fangs, inspired by Nosferatu’s vampire, Count Orlok, in the 1922 horror classic.

Loew consumes a live cockroach as part of his expected change, which is precisely what Cage did for his role in the film, no special wizardry or deception necessary.

Originally scheduled to consume a raw egg, the actor claimed that he didn’t believe it was terrifying enough, instead opting for a live cockroach.

‘I saw it as a business decision, because when people see the cockroach go in my mouth… [they] really react,’ the actor said on the DVD’s commentary track.

Fortunately, Hoult was able to enjoy some artificial insects while filming Renfield, as his character’s magical skills are enhanced by creepy-crawlies.

‘The cockroaches I got to eat in this were caramel,’ the 33-year-old revealed to Yahoo Entertainment. ‘I had crickets that were actually quite yummy; they were salt and vinegar flavoured or barbecue smoky flavour.’

However, co-star Nicolas Cage seemed to be interested in humans accepting the concept of eating cockroaches.

‘If you could get rid of your fear, your phobia of eating insects, you could solve world starvation,’ the actor claimed. ‘High protein, no fat, excellent nutrients, abundance. They’re everywhere! But nope — not gonna happen.’

Yeah, we’ll let you know, Nic…
