It may have been one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the winter, but Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie’s Babylon has bombed at the box office.
The Damien Chazelle written and directed film – which also stars Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Tobey Maguire – has already been nominated at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, but the hype has unfortunately not helped to sell tickets.
With a budget of around $80,000,000 (£66,249,600), the movie grossed less than $6,000,000 (£4,968,720) in its opening four-day weekend.
The movie, which follows different characters during the rise of sound films in the 1920s following the era of silent films, has drawn comparisons to Amsterdam – which also stars Margot Robbie, and equally bombed at the box office.
David O. Russell’s comedy thriller, which saw Margot star alongside Christian Bale, has grossed just $14,900,000 (£12,341,372) in two months in the United States against an $80,000,000 budget.
Margot’s fans have jumped to her defence after ‘misogynistic’ tweets have blamed her for the lack of success of the two films.
One fan wrote: ‘the way they blame her for these flops like they arent also led by male movie stars who been in the game longer than her.’
A second said: ‘That’s what’s called Hollywood misogyny, they always protect their male actors…let this be a rude Awakening for Margot Robbie who thinks she’s part of the “Hollywood boys club” she’s not, as Hollywood would always protect their male stars not females.’
While a third penned: ‘So much of the “BABYLON BOMBED!” narrative has been centered around Margot Robbie “not being a movie star/a draw” and yet… Brad Pitt, an Oscar winner who has been in the biz twice as long as her and was first billed, has come out relatively unscathed? Huh?’
A final fan wrote: ‘the aim at Margot has been very strange to me. i know she doesnt need defending but its at the very least just…. disingenuous.’
Despite its slow start at the box office, Babylon is receiving rave reviews from critics – including five stars from Metro.co.uk.

Babylon hits UK cinemas on January 20.
