The Barbie team deserves a standing ovation for their brilliant marketing plan. Whoever came up with the notion of a bright pink Tardis is unquestionably our hero.
The famed blue police box, which acts as The Doctor’s “time and relative dimension in space,” has reappeared in London, although with some artistic licence.
On Tuesday, July 11, a Barbie-themed Tardis appeared near the Tower Bridge in the city, having been given a brilliant pink makeover, with a little portion of the original blue still poking through.
The official Twitter account for Doctor Who tweeted a photo of the rebuilt police box. Warner Bros. also announced it on their Instagram page.
The Tardis is normally blue, with varying tints over the years. However, this particular Barbie-inspired pink Tardis is possibly the best of them all.
Given that the current Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, previously portrayed a Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the pink Tardis is the ideal way to commemorate the character’s 15th iteration.
Ncuti appears in the next film alongside Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells, two additional Sex Education cast members.
The Doctor Who Twitter page shared a picture of the Barbie-inspired Tardis, tweeting ‘Come on TARDIS, let’s go party 💖💖 #DoctorWho.’
Fans flocked to social media to post photos of the colourful installation, which was purportedly put up for a promotional effort by Warner Bros.
A placard alongside the hot pink time machine read: ‘Warner Bros (the Company) is presently filming a promotional and publicity campaign for “Barbie”.’
It acted as a subtle reminder that by being present, individuals consent to being recorded and should leave the area immediately if they do not want to be included in Barbie’s promotional video.
One fan posted pictures alongside the Barbie-inspired Tardis (or Barbis?), writing ‘Just strolled past it! Brightened up my morning commute!’
‘I absolutely adore it. It’s just perfect,’ commented another.
‘Spotted a Pink Tardis by the Tower Bridge this morning 😱 Unbeatable Barbie marketing,’ another fan shared.
A Doctor Who enthusiast humorously commented: ‘Ah, the chameleon circuit finally seems operational.’
For unfamiliar folks, the chameleon circuit controls the Tardis’s external appearance in Doctor Who. However, it is supposedly malfunctioning, causing the machine to retain the police box exterior.
Similar to how each version of the character undergoes changes in style, appearance, and personality, the trusty police box also experiences some internal remodelling.
Unfortunately, it’s rather unlikely that the Barbis (that’s official now) will feature in the show, as traditionally the Tardis is always blue, and this pink incarnation is purely promotional.
But fans can still visit and take pictures with the vivid pink box as they eagerly wait for Barbie to grace the silver screen on July 21.
Doctor Who’s 14th season still doesn’t have an official release date. However, it is set to debut next year with Ncuti busy filming scenes while donning his 60s-inspired suits.
