James Cameron has been hard at work filming the second and third Avatar movies and he’s given fans a sneak peek behind the scenes.
The director, who helmed the first movie, which became the highest-grossing film before Avengers: Endgame, revealed the high-tech equipment that has allowed him and his team to create the movies.
Sharing a photo of a boat on set, as well as a dramatic crane, James, 66, said: ‘The last set for 2020 filming —The Matador (a 50’ forward command boat) on a 16-ton, 360 degree motion-control base.
‘Three Technocranes and a Russian Arm mounted on top of a Mercedes-Benz. Just another day on the set of the Avatar sequels.’
Sounds very complicated, but we’re sure he’s got it under control!
Fans were previously treated to BTS glimpses including Kate Winslet showing off her diving skills.
The Titanic director and star reunited to film for the sequels, and she’s quite literally been thrown in at the deep end, revealing she had to hold her breath for more than seven minutes.
The new shots are presumably sets from the third movie, as James previously revealed the second one has actually finished shooting.
He revealed: ‘Covid hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production.
‘As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already.
‘Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3,’ he said in the video conference for the 2020 Austrian World Summit environmental conference.
He continued: ‘We’re a hundred percent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 percent complete on Avatar 3.’
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are set to reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri in the sequels. Sigourney Weaver (Dr. Grace Augustine) and Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch) will also be returning.
Avatar 2 is set for release in December 2022.
