The Blair Witch Project, which notoriously had fans puke in the aisles, is returning following a resurrection of the renowned 1999 horror film.

Jason Blum, the producer and horror maestro, is reviving The Blair Witch Project 25 years after its first release.

Adam Fogelson of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group unveiled the fresh approach on the picture at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Fogelson added that the film is a ‘new vision for Blair Witch, that will revive this horror classic for a new audience’.

Variety reports that this new film will be the first in a multi-picture pact with Blumhouse to’reimagine’ horror classics for Lionsgate.

Blum’s horror production business, Blumhouse, has already achieved global success with spine-tingling films such as the massively successful Paranormal Activity and The Purge series, as well as recent smashes M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Overall, Blumhouse films have grossed about $6 billion at the box office globally, generally on lesser budgets.

The original The Blair Witch Project, starring Heather Donahue, Michael Williams, and Joshua Leonard, had a small budget yet became one of the most lucrative films ever, grossing $28.5 million in its first weekend of wide distribution.

It also elicited strong emotions, with audience members feeling queasy and even vomiting during its initial theatrical run, prompting cinemas to issue health warnings.

The discovered footage indie film, however, did not turn people’s stomachs due to an abundance of gore and blood; rather, the wobbling of the handheld camera upset folks who are prone to motion sickness.

Bonnie Hunsaker, the managing director of AMC Colonial at the time, was forced to post a warning for screenings of the film when the theatre experienced at least one audience member vomiting at every showing.

She said: ‘This past weekend we put up a sign that said the hand-held camera can create motion sickness, and if you’re susceptible to motion sickness you may want to rethink your viewing choice.’

A year later, the amateur film is discovered in a suitcase stashed beneath an abandoned house.

Blum will collaborate with Roy Lee, the producer of the 2016 sequel Blair Witch, on this revival.

It was the third installment in the franchise series, following 2000’s rapid follow-up, Blair Witch: Book of Shadows, which used a film-within-a-film format.

There is no set release date for the Blair Witch Project revival.
