The Little Mermaid will return to the big screen as a completely different lady, one who won’t be abandoning her underwater home to pursue a man.

Halle Bailey will portray Disney’s iconic princess Ariel in the live-action adaptation, which will be released this summer.

The original 1989 cartoon portrays a young mermaid who falls in love with human prince Eric and wishes to live above water.

Although being one of the most beloved Disney stories, the film has long been criticised by some for what they see as inappropriate message, implying that Ariel has to be saved by a male in order to achieve her dream.

According to Halle’s latest teaser, the live-action adaptation will give The Little Mermaid a more contemporary edge.

‘I’m really excited for my version of the film because we’ve definitely changed that perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy,’ she told Edition magazine.

‘It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants.’

Halle, 22, continued: ‘As women we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above. And I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.’

The Do It singer also discussed the hatred she faced after being introduced as the new Ariel, but claimed the beautiful comments from young Black girls inspired her.

Last month, a new teaser for The Little Mermaid was released, revealing the first complete look at Ursula, the witch played by Melissa McCarthy.

The clip included fresh footage of Ariel frolicking beneath the waves, and the purple villain’s visage appeared at the conclusion while Ursula cackled.

The adaptation will also feature Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Jonah Hauer-King in addition to Halle and Melissa. Shooting finished in July 2021, with fans clamouring for more ever since Halle gave the first peek of herself as Ariel to commemorate the occasion.

The Little Mermaid will be released in theatres on May 29, with the soundtrack following on May 19.
