Slow Horses star Gary Oldman has revealed a highly negative critique of his performance as Sirius Black – and his one major regret – in a statement that is sure to enrage Harry Potter fans everywhere.
The actor, 65, played Harry Potter’s godfather in the third installment of the movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but he’s since said that he’s not particularly happy of his portrayal.
‘I believe my work in it is mediocre,’ Oscar winner Gary Oldman admitted.
On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Oldman expressed regret for not following in the footsteps of the late Alan Rickman, who played Professor Severus Snape so well.
Rickman famously pre-read JK Rowling‘s books, on which the films were based, resulting in a greater interpretation of the character, according to Oldman.
‘Maybe if I had read the books like Alan, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently,’ he said.
Oldman went on to joke his character was killed off too early, adding: ‘We [the cast] were all taking bets [on which character would die], you know, it’s Hagrid, and I was there going, no, no, no, maybe it’s Ron. And then you kind of open the script and you go, it’s me. I’m out of here.’
In the Harry Potter films, Oldman co-starred with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.
In three of the popular films, he played Harry’s ‘father figure’ Sirius Black: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Unfortunately (and this is a spoiler alert, so divert your attention now if you haven’t read or watched Harry Potter), Sirius died in the fifth book in the series, Order of the Phoenix, after being murdered by the wicked Bellatrix Lestrange.
During the podcast, the Bram Stoker’s Dracula actor claimed that he is often critical of his own work, which he believes is a good thing.
He explained: ‘I’ll tell you what it is. It’s like anything, I think if I sat and watched myself in something and said, “My God, I’m amazing,” that would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better…
‘It’s so subjective. It’s such a personal thing that you’re looking at that other people are not seeing … It’s not to disrespect someone who says to me, ‘Oh, I really love you in that movie,’ and I’m thinking, ‘I’m terrible in that movie. What are they talking about?’ It’s not that. It’s [that] they’re seeing something else.’

Oldman has lately received a lot of recognition for his role as Jackson Lamb in the smash Apple+ comedy Slow Horses.
The third season of the grim comedic thriller concluded earlier this week, with viewers exclaiming that it was “the best show of 2023.”
