Eight years after the last film, Bridget Jones is ready to return on screen after plans for a fourth film were ‘confirmed’.
It’s fantastic news for fans of the bedraggled, yet undeniably iconic love-sick Londoner, who we last saw in Bridget Jones’ Baby (2016).
In the third episode of the renowned film series, following Bridget Jones’ Diary in 2001 and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason in 2004, we saw the 32-year-old British singleton, masterfully portrayed by Renée Zellweger, finally achieve her happy ending.
The original Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen in 1813, was based on Helen Fielding’s 1996 book of the same name.
It followed Bridget as she kept a diary of the events she wished to happen in her life.
However, she soon finds herself in a quandary when two men, the sleazy yet attractive Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and the noble but rigid Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), begin to battle for her favour.
A fourth film about her love adventures will begin production in London in the coming months, with the original holy trinity of rom-com performers Renée, Colin, and Hugh returning to reprise their roles.
Pre-production is already ‘well under way’, with shooting to begin in May, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The actress is apparently seeking for a place to reside while filming on the project.
‘Bridget is back and is about to take over London,’ a movie source told the publication.
‘Filming is being mapped out already and all of the pre- production is in place.
‘There was some uncertainty about whether it would get off the ground, but the movie is coming.’
They added: ‘Renee is excited about bringing Bridget back. She adores the character so much. Bridget Jones fever is expected to sweep across London this spring.’
The most recent edition received amazing reviews, leaving us all wanting more.
It concluded with Bridget marrying Mark, with whom she had a rollercoaster relationship over the course of three films, and the lawyer revealing himself to be the father of her child.
At the end of Bridget Jones’ Baby, an Easter egg hinted that the series may not be over yet.
Hugh did not appear in the film, as his character was assumed dead at the start following an aircraft crash. But at the finale, a newspaper article stated that he had been discovered alive, leaving fans excited about the potential of a fourth film.
However, if the new film follows the narrative of writer Helen Fielding’s most recent update on Bridget’s life, Mad About The Boy, it may end in catastrophe for Mark Darcy.
When asked about a fourth film, Fielding revealed two years ago that she was working on an adaptation of her 2013 novel Mad About the Boy, which takes place four years after Mark Darcy’s tragic death and follows Bridget as she navigates the difficulties of being a single parent and returning to the dating pool as a fifty-something.
She told Radio Times that every one of her films that got made was a ‘miracle’.
‘I think it’s really difficult to make films and to make them happen and to make them good and we want it to be really good. But I really hope so. I’d love to see it on the screen,’ she added.
That same year, a source told The Sun that plans for a movie were underway.
‘Producers always knew there was a huge market for another sequel when the right story was available, and this feels like the right time to tell it,’ the insider said.
‘It will be seven or eight years since the last movie by the time this one hits the big screen, and fans will be desperate to find out what happened. It’s a British classic.’
The original movie grossed £222 million at the box office.
The 2019 biopic of Judy Garland was Renee’s last big-screen role.
