Critics who were able to see Oppenheimer early have posted a lot of positive comments about the future movie on social media, calling it “amazing.”
After the film’s Paris screening, which was attended by famous people like Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr., media were allowed to talk about their first impressions of the movie.
Overall, it will take a little longer for full reports to come.
The movie is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American scientist who is widely known as the man who invented the atomic bomb, and his role in the Manhattan Project.
From 1942 to 1946, the Manhattan Project was in place. It led to the development of nuclear weapons, which were later used to bomb the Japanese towns of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Christopher Nolan, who is known for films like “Inception,” “The Dark Knight Trilogy,” and “The Prestige,” always sets up high standards for his audiences.
However, if these first reactions are to be believed, then Nolan has once more lived up to the hype – if not surpassed it.
‘Oppenheimer left me stunned: a character study on the grandest scale, with a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow,’ praised Total Film’s deputy editor Matt Maytum.
Meanwhile Telegraph film critic Robbie Collin called it ‘a total knockout that split my brain open like a twitchy plutonium nucleus and left me sobbing through the end credits like I can’t even remember what else’.
He also added: ‘And for all those who’ve groused about the lack of sex in Christopher Nolan’s earlier work… boy oh BOY, are you getting some sex as only Nolan could stage it in this one.’
Freelance journalist Simon Thompson labelled Oppenheimer ‘powerful stuff’ and promised that lead actor Cillian Murphy’s ‘flawless awards worthy performance is next level’.
‘Every player in this rich ensemble cast is at the top of their game. Christopher Nolan’s haunting opus is remarkable and Hoyte van Hoytema‘s execution of his vision is breathtaking,’ he shared.
Others are dubbing it Nolan’s ‘masterpiece’, with writer and producer Ben Mekler also describing it as a ‘chilling, galvanizing spectacle anchored by astounding performances’ and ‘a definite Oscar contender’.
‘Oppenheimer is truly a spectacular achievement, in its truthful, concise adaptation, inventive storytelling and nuanced performances from Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and the many, many others involved – some just for a scene,’ tweeted Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr.
‘It’s hard to talk about something as dense as this in something as silly as a tweet or thread but Oppenheimer really is a serious, philosophical, adult drama that’s as tense and exciting as Dunkirk. And the big moment – THAT MOMENT – is awe inspiring.’
The live-action Barbie movie by Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, which is going up against Oppenheimer on opening day, has also gotten good early reviews, making July a great month to go to the movies.
Fans have called the two films going up against each other a “Barbenheimer,” and the people who made them want fans to see both on opening day if they can.
‘It’s all love – double up, double up twice. I think you’ve got to see what the experience is, Barbie then Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer then Barbie. I think you’ve got to take all of the journeys,’ director Gerwig told The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, Murphy’s advice was ‘for people to go see both, on the same day’.
‘If they are good films, then that’s cinema’s gain,’ he pointed out Spanish publication La Vanguardia.
Oppeheimer hits UK cinemas on Friday, July 21.
