We could see Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga nominated at the 2021 Oscars.
It’s been a rough year for the Eurovision Song Contest, having been forced to cancel the show for the first time ever due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, Will Ferrell’s comedy about the greatest and most ridiculous show on earth is one step closer to being nominated at the Academy Awards.
The shortlists for nine categories have been revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga has been shortlisted for best original song.
Before you go shouting ‘play jaja ding dong’, Husavik is the one to make the cut.
The song, also known as My Hometown, is performed by Rachel McAdams’ character Sigrit at the climax of the movie, with her and Lars (Will Ferrell) ditching their official Eurovision entry Double Trouble to sing the emotional song.
Of course, the switch gets Iceland disqualified from the contest, but it’s a beautiful moment.
While Ferrell does sing on Husavik, it’s actually Molly Sandén – who has previously represented Sweden at Junior Eurovision and attempted to represent her country at the main event – who sings McAdams’ parts.
Atli Örvarsson composed the song while the lyrics were provided by Fat Max Gsus, Rickard Göransson, and Savan Kotecha.
Husavik was one of 15 songs to be shortlisted out of a possible 105 eligible tunes.
It faces stiff competition from Turntables from All In: The Fight for Democracy, See What Youve Done from Belly of the Beast, Wuhan Flu from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Never Break from Giving Voice, Make It Work from Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Fight For You from Judas and the Black Messiah, lo Sì (Seen) from The Life Ahead, Rain Song from Minari, Show Me Your Soul from Mr Soul!, Loyal Brave True from Mulan, Free from The One and Only Ivan, Speak Now from One Night in Miami, Green from Sound of Metal, and Hear My Voice from The Trial of the Chicago 7.
The shortlist voting conclude on February 5, and the official voting will begin on March 5.
The full list of nominations will be unveiled on March 15.
