A comic that features Superman’s first-ever appearance has fetched a mind-blowing £2.3 million pounds at auction.

Action Comics No 1 shows the alien superhero for the first time ever, as he appears on the cover holding a car over his head while revealing of his powers inside the issue.

Released in 1938, the first Action Comic introduced the world to the now-iconic Superman, and the issue is now considered among the most important ever made by comic book enthusiasts.

And now, that very issue has sold at auction for $3.2 million (£2.3 million) after being bought by a young boy at a newsstand more than 80 years ago for 10 cents – the equivalent of £1.50 today.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the issue is nicknamed ‘the Rocket Copy’ after the 13-year-old original owner added a rocket stamp to the cover.

The sale on Sunday, handled by Heritage Auctions, represents the first time the Rocket Copy has ever been sold, having been handed down to the relatives of the original owner.

It was purchased on behalf of a private buyer by collectables marketplace Goldin, with CEO Ken Goldin tweeting that is was ‘fun bidding and winning a $3 mil + item (sic)’.

He added that the comic was ‘going to a great home’.

The auction also featured artwork from the Secret Wars No 8 comic, which shows Spider-Man in his black suit.

The comic itself tells the origin of how Spider-Man got the black suit – a story which has been told and re-told throughout the years, most recently in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2, and Tom Hardy’s Venom movies
