Christopher Nolan has hit out at the news Warner Bros will be releasing their entire slate of 2021 films both in cinemas and on HBO Max.
The studio’s upcoming 17 films including The Matrix 4 and Dune, will be available to watch on the streaming service at home on the same day they come out on the big screen.
It comes amid upheaval in the film industry due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with many people choosing to avoid cinemas.
The Batman Begins director described the deal as ‘not a very rational business decision’ which has apparently ‘upset a lot of people’.
He told PEOPLE: ‘The way in which they did it — they didn’t tell any of the filmmakers or any of the movie stars involved in those projects for 2021.
‘These were people who spent years engaged on projects that were intended to be releases for the big screen and for home video worldwide.’
Nolan, who released his film Tenet in cinemas this year, added that ‘longer-term, people love going to the movies’ and feels people will go back ‘when it’s possible to do so’.
The Inception director added that the deal may be ‘jockeying for short-term advantage’.
The filmmaker was ‘thrilled’ with how Tenet performed at the box office, telling Los Angeles Times: ‘I am worried that the studios are drawing the wrong conclusions from our release — that rather than looking at where the film has worked well and how that can provide them with much needed revenue, they’re looking at where it hasn’t lived up to pre-Covid expectations and will start using that as an excuse to make exhibition take all the losses from the pandemic instead of getting in the game and adapting — or rebuilding our business, in other words.’
Warner Bros’ slate for next year also features blockbusters like Godzilla vs Kong, Space Jam: A New Legacy and The Suicide Squad.
They will be available to watch on HBO Max for 31 days after theatrical release.
Warner Media previously announced Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig, will land on the platform on December 25 in the US.
