The baby names trending in 2023 have been announced, and while there’s a twist for girls, the boys’ list seems quite unchanged.

Sophia – the throne-holder previously – has been replaced by Lily at the top. Now, Sophia ranks second.

Olivia positions at number three – the same slot it held in 2022 – although it was the favorite from 2015 until 2021.

In its yearly mid-term top 100 roundup, BabyCentre.co.uk also disclosed that Amelia and Freya have gained traction, making up the top five, and Aria too increased its popularity moving up two slots to rank sixth.

Remarkably, the name Mila has seen a steep rise of 31 positions, currently being the 10th most favored name of this year so far.

Layla, Maryam, Evelyn, and Aurora also witnessed substantial increases in popularity.

Our adored TV shows seem to be playing a part in inspiring new parents, as names used more frequently have been inspired by shows like Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte.

For instance, Charlotte surged to 25th, while Violet hopped 19 places to 47th, and Penelope grew 14 positions, situating it at 60th on the list.

Names inspired by favourite shows are also making their mark in boys’ names. Take Succession’s Logan, for instance, the character seems to have influenced the name’s popularity as it climbed six spots to hold 48th place.

The name Roman, also from Succession, rose nine places to rank 47th.

Yet, when it comes to the top five in the boys’ category, the 2023 list is unchanged.

Muhammad leads, followed by Noah, Theo, Leo and Oliver – exactly the same sequence as in 2022.

However, Arthur has risen five slots to take sixth place among favored names; whereas George, Luca and Ethan appear to have decreased in preference.

Strikingly, Jude saw a surge of 28 spots to nestle in the list of 20 most liked names, as did Jacob, Liam and Alfie.
