‘That’s not a carrot’: new M&S Easter egg causes predictably hilarious reaction on Twitter

When it comes to major holidays, stores are constantly competing to see who can introduce the most eye-catching cuisine.

While their designs frequently hit the spot, their one-upmanship may occasionally go too far.

M&S is the most recent offender, having publicised their Easter special on Twitter this week.

‘Introducing our new eggs-ellent “23 carrot gold” egg,’ the shop stated with a photograph of a big, veg-shaped confection.

‘This treat is made from golden blond chocolate before being covered in edible gold leaf, and it comes with salted caramel-filled chocolate bunny ears.’

The obvious resemblance to a sex toy, rather than the contents, got people talking.

‘What on earth is that?’ asked one customer, who claimed that the egg was ‘open to all sorts of imagination.’

Another joked: ‘Who on Earth thought that “carrot” was a good idea? Are you certain it isn’t a Valentine’s “top shelf” item?’

‘Easter sex toy,’ wrote a third commenter, while one more said: ‘This “egg” looks like something that Lovehoney would sell.’

Some cheeky souls termed it ‘girthy’ and ‘phallic,’ implying that it would not be acceptable for a family-friendly egg hunt come April.

Many people mentioned Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot, who acts as the German supermarket’s mascot during the Christmas season.

Aldi and M&S have been involved in a number of court skirmishes over similar goods, including a light-up gin bottle and caterpillar pastries.

The 24 Carrot Gold Egg’s release has even been dubbed #carrotgate, with Aldi replying to the announcement with a tongue-in-cheek jibe about lawyers.

Aside from sex toy analogies and gastronomic feuding, many people were delighted to sample the new M&S egg.

There is no official release date yet, so keep a look out for it the next time you go shopping. We don’t think you’ll miss it as you search the aisles.

Just be sure to keep it in the fridge rather than on your bedside table, since this might lead to a lot of confusion and a lot of clutter.
