Recently it was Earth Day so, naturally, the planet is playing on our minds.
The fashion industry’s mark on the environment has been a hot topic for many years and, as a result, big brands have vowed to be more eco-friendly going forward.
But as well as the star players of the fashion world, there are a number of lesser-known sustainable brands doing their bit, too.
Many make small collections and recycle materials to ensure they are contributing to a better, greener world.
We’ve rounded up some of these smaller brands to support for Earth Day and beyond.
OMNES
OMNES has made it its mission to break the fast-fashion cycles we’ve become all too familiar with. Instead it focuses on creating high-quality pieces that stand the test of time.
The latest collection is made with certified, renewable wood sources and 100% recycled polyester – which has been made using post-consumer waste like plastic bottles.
When the garments reach the end of their life, they can be recycled, too. The summer dress collection is truly something to behold, with vibrant prints and gorgeous florals.
Albaray
You may have come across this brand on Instagram recently, being a favourite amongst bloggers.
Albaray keeps sustainability close to heart with fabrics – even the packaging, swing tags and labels are recycled and fully recyclable.
You’re bound to find something you love from this brand, with everything from gorgeous gingham dresses to comfy jumpsuits.
nu-in
According to nu-in, only 1% off all textile production is made using recycled materials – but the brand wants to change that.
Its ethos is to make affordable fashion and sustainably coexist, to be a little nicer to the planet and kinder to our bank balances in the process.
The design teams work closely with their factories to develop new ways in which they can create more sustainable materials.
It boasts come amazing basics and wardrobe staples, including jeans, loungewear and T-shirts.
All Birds
All Birds specialises in footwear and likes to keep things small by offering a carefully curated product range for all seasons. This means it has a tight-knit supply chain and less of an environmental footprint – not to mention the brand also measures everything that contributes to it, from factory floor equipment to HQ lighting. So you can step a little lighter knowing you’re doing your bit by buying All Birds shoes.
Franks London
To reduce waste, Franks London uses upcycled fabrics and is neither trend-led or mass-produced.
Its latest collaboration is with digital creator Michelle Driscoll and is bursting with colours and summery designs – including a stunning blue gingham number.
Riley Studio
Riley Studio creates its gender neutral collection from waste materials and is saving water and oil in the process. It offers basics such as cardigans, polo tops, shirts, shorts and more – all of which are wardrobe staples that are designed to last.
Fund Jumpers
This quirky jumper brand not only boasts a collection of adorable pieces but also works with Carbon Trust to offset its carbon footprint. The yarn that makes up the statement jumpers comes from independent British farmers who make sustainable wool.
Sheep Inc
This brand is leading the way with carbon-negative knitwear. It sources wool from suppliers that have a regenerative approach to farming. The collection is small but mighty, with just a few pieces to choose from – available in different colours.
Zavi
Zavi’s fabrics are made from natural fibres and dyes that are eco-friendly and organically produced. The result? Clothes that last longer – so work against the fast fashion industry. There are sophisticated midi dresses, smart jumpsuits, jackets and strappy tops – so there’s something for every occasion.
