Spring 2021 Outfit Ideas & How To Style Them

Spring has sprung, which can only mean the reintroduction of a sartorial stalwart: the trench coat. The transitional staple has long outgrown its military roots (it was first worn by officers in WWI, with Burberry and Aquascutum the earliest adopters of the style) and now serves as the perfect shower-proof piece in every Brit’s wardrobe.

Thanks to Hollywood’s most glamorous silver screen sirens, from Audrey Hepburn to Marlene Dietrich, a traditional belted beige trench has a timeless elegance and is still a great investment. But with a slew of designers like Azzedine Alaïa, Jean Paul Gaultier and Rei Kawakubo deconstructing, reconstructing and stripping back the classic, there are plenty of styles, shapes and shades to choose from.

On the (virtual) catwalks of SS21 we saw trenches with mutton leg sleeves at Alexander McQueen and Altuzarra, shades of obsidian at Balmain and Art School, and patent, denim and floral remixes at Burberry. Elsewhere, purveyors of minimalism COS, Arket and Weekday have brilliant oversized mackintosh styles, while Karen Millen Curve has the most luscious leather take.
