Spring has sprung, which can only mean the reintroduction of a sartorial stalwart: the trench coat. The transitional staple has long outgrown its military roots (it was first worn by officers in WWI, with Burberry and Aquascutum the earliest adopters of the style) and now serves as the perfect shower-proof piece in every Brit’s wardrobe.
Thanks to Hollywood’s most glamorous silver screen sirens, from Audrey Hepburn to Marlene Dietrich, a traditional belted beige trench has a timeless elegance and is still a great investment. But with a slew of designers like Azzedine Alaïa, Jean Paul Gaultier and Rei Kawakubo deconstructing, reconstructing and stripping back the classic, there are plenty of styles, shapes and shades to choose from.
On the (virtual) catwalks of SS21 we saw trenches with mutton leg sleeves at Alexander McQueen and Altuzarra, shades of obsidian at Balmain and Art School, and patent, denim and floral remixes at Burberry. Elsewhere, purveyors of minimalism COS, Arket and Weekday have brilliant oversized mackintosh styles, while Karen Millen Curve has the most luscious leather take.
In need of some styling ideas for the in-between weather? Look no further than Instagram’s finest. From head-to-toe tonal looks to contemporary check, here’s how to dress up (or down) your trench coat this spring.
Aoife Mulvenna‘s tonal look has us wanting to brave potential stains this spring. Though more of a soutien collar mac than a trench, we love this practical classic for the ever changing weather.

Grece Ghanem never fails to turn out a look that feels sophisticated – even when it involves a grey marl sweatshirt. Put the loungewear you’ve been wearing for the past 12 months to good use with a stone trench and textural accessories.
Staud Bean Bag, $, available at 24S
Karen Blanchard‘s looks never fail to inspire us, and she’s a master accessoriser. A flash of leopard print and leather trousers amp up a neutral trench, while lug-soled boots stop the outfit from veering into traditional territory.
Trust Monikh to make such a simple outfit look so elevated. Teaming neutrals with navy breaks up the monotone and breezy linen fabrics keep things cool as the weather warms up.
Pompeii Kiran Crude Shoe, $, available at Pompeii
Mango Twisted Strap Baguette Bag, $, available at Mango
Schuh Adam Chunky Chelsea Boots, $, available at Schuh
We love Stephanie Yeboah‘s twist on a classic. The introduction of checked panelling gives the trench a 2021 remix but we’re digging the teamed up neutrals in her peachy suit, too.
